. After dropping two straight games, when the breaks
went the wrong way,' the Pelicans migrated out of the city
feunday and covered themselves with glory by winning a hectic
ll-ihning- ball game, under the shadows of the snow-capped
peak of Mount Shasta. When the last Shasta man up popped
but in that , fateful 11th inning the Pelicans heaved a deep
tigK of relief they, had won-5 to 4. But it was anyone's game
irbra start to finish. The Pelicans, who took the lead in the
second inning, and kept it until they were tied in the eighth,
were constantly threatened by the treacherous Shastas. No
harder fought battle, nor more exciting contest has ever been
played anywhere.

Pelican, and as usual the bard
working southpaw "was "right."

The Pelicans drew first blood
in the second, when Bayness led
oft with a scratch hit. He reach
ed second on a sacrifice by Staler,
stole third and '. came In on De
mltt' single. Neither team scored
again until 7th. In the Pelican half
Bert Arnold, the first man up,
smacked one of Bay's fast ones for
a row of base hits that ended, at
home plate. The ball cleared the
fence between left . field and ten-1
ter,by nearly 20 feet and may be
rolling yet The Shastas came
back In their half when Davenport
duplicated Arnold's stunt, although
the, hit as not so long. The Pel
icans . pulled up In the first halt
of the eighth and decided a 2 to 1
lead was not sufficient. At least
Mohler was of that opinion. De-
mitt struck out .Mohler hit the
first ' baTl ' pitched over the fence !
aid the count was 3 to 1. Bay, I
who-bad pitched a good game up
until (his . time was yanked after
the home run ana .replaced by Col
ledge. This bird Colledge threw a '
ball that resounded in the air from

ledge retired the side.
- The Shastas went to bat In their
half of the 8th, determined to
start their dirty work. They did.

when Norwest tried to nail Brooks
at third. It was a close play but
Brooks was safe at third. Loud
went out, Norwest to Arnold.
Bruce got to second safely because
he had taken a big lead off and
went' down on an apparent hit and
ran play. Lee, the next Shasta
man up got a Texas leaguer into
oenterfield and both Bruce and
Brooks ' scored. It was anybody's
game now it It ever was. Mohler
started burning them In harder
than he has ever been known to

the control with it and the hard
hitting Devenport fanned for the
last out.

ninth. In the tenth Norwest got
a double with 2 out but Watts
'struck out and the Pelican short
stop died on base. Mohler was go

Still the Shastas fought. A new
ball was , thrown out and Palmer
hit the. first heave of Mohler's over
the fence. .The score waa now

ting rampage was on. Lee the
next , man up doubled. Devenport
was sate on a fielder's choice, and
Lee was safe at third. Things
had gone too far. Kane were down
and a man on first and third. Moh
ler again' rose to the occasion. The
side was retired on little Infield
popout or rollers. The Pelicans
went to the showers a happier out
fit, and rated among the most dan
gerous teams on the circuit.

YREKA, Calif.. June 8. The
Yrekas had an off day here Sun
day and Weed took the game 7 to
6. Inability to pHch airtight ball

star Yreka pitcher In the eighth.
Eddy who finished pitched a tine
game. But It was poor support that
lost the 'game. Weed rooters who
came over 300 "strong to see the
game got 4nto a jam with Sheriff
Calkins when they Insisted on using
a siren to rattle Yreka pitchers.
The fracas ended, when the sher
iff, after the Yreka rooters re
fused to take off the siren, promptly
took possession of the car and 'tore
the siren off. Ho dared any Weed
man to come and take It away from
him. No one has come yet.
The ball park could not accom
odate the crowd, estimated at 1900.
Grandstand, bleachers and auto
parking space were crowded to the
limit.
