4 TecBn pomis Intaiiie KaifIS lend Lava Bears Next lest; Pelicans Healthy A vaslly improved Klamath Falls Pelican basketball quint takes to the road tonight in search of the third victory of the new season. Al Keck'i Pelicans, following a pair of opening-season wins over RoseburR last weekend, travel to Bend to face the up-and-coming Lava Bears. Preceding the Pelicans on the first road trip of the season will be the Klamalh Falls jun 'jor varsity club ready to face ; the Bend JVs in the preliminary action. J For the Pelicans, the outside shooting of the Lava Bears and Iho home court advantaRe owned by the Bend five are the principal items of concern. Hie Lava Bears have in tho past been extremely strong at home and whether the Pels are able to overcome this has prompted much discussion. Practice sessions this week have been devoted to both of fensive and defensive work de . spite the successful p c r '. formance in bolh departments J last weekend against the In ; dians. Additionally, I h e Pelicans have stressed individual work on slight weaknesses in an ef fort to polish both the attack and the defense. Interest at the home of Iho Bears is al a high pilch follow ing an impressive opening last weekend. A smaller, but fast and sharp Madras White Buffalo team was the first to fall under the guns of the Bears as a 72-43 victory was recorded. The following night, as if to prove this initial bombardment was not by accident, tlie Lava Bears rolled over the Prineville Cowboys 70-44 after breaking away from a close halftime ad vantage. "In the first half against Prineville, we only hit on 11 of 44 shots. And in the second half. 1 don't know whether to credit our defense or if Prine ville was just cold, but this is where we exploded," comments Hudson on this victory. The Bears' strong suit ap pc;irs to be depth and height. The latter factor is perhaps not as vital as the former, with the Bear height ending at (-4, but with others touching the 6-1 mark. Still, this height does not ap proach that offered by the Rose burg Indians at 6-7, 6-5 and a pair a I 6-2. IJcpihwisc the Bears are in an enviable position, with 15 members of the squad all con sidered by tho head man capa ble of handling a first-five role on any given night. "We knew our defense will be tested to the limit, but if we can do this job and keep our offense moving, I feel we might be all right." The Lava Bears have been taking a long look at that Peli can olfcn.se, too. They're looking at what they term ". . . Klamath Falls' one two punch of Terry Ash and (ienc Kingsbury." The tremendous offensive work accomplished by this pair last weekend justified this, hut added lo llns oflense is the work guard Lanny Guyer in bolh scoring and feeding. The Badgers are paced by a pair of all-conference standouts in Leon Johnson 6-0 1 and 6-3 Ken Alcorn.
