;1 Dallas Ambulance Driver Describes Frantic Moments Following Shooting EDITORS NOTE: Ambulance driver Aubrey Rike, 23, and his partner. Den nis McGulre, had just delivered an emergency patient to Park, land Hospital in Dallas when President Kennedy, an assas sin's bullet through his brain, was rushed into the hospital. This is his story. By AUBREY RIKE As Told To Inilrd Press International DALLAS (UPH - "We had just brought our patient in and were at the emergency desk at the hospital when these two men came in. One was carrying a briefcase and the other a big rifle. It looked like a machine gun to me. "The one with the brief case yelled, 'we need some stretch ers right now.' TIk one with the gun said, 'all right, everybody clear out of here.' "I looked up and the first man I saw coming in w as Vice President Johnson. From the way he was walking and be cause he was so pale, I thought he had suffered another heart attack. "They brought in Governor Connally. 1 recognized his face. Ifts chest and stomach were covered with blood and I knew immediately he had been shot. There was too much blood for a stabbing and it was too local ized for an auto accident. "Then they wheeled in this stretcher w ith a man's body on it. His head was covered, but I recognized Mrs. Kennedy. She was running alongside the stretcher, holding onto it and crying. I knew then the Presi dent had been shot. "When the emergency room quieted down, they had us bring our patient back, then we took him to general medicine. That's when the call came over the loudspeaker for us to report immediately to our ambulance. "We rushed back to the am bulance and there was a man in a suit and carrying a gun, there with a Dallas policeman. They told us to stay with the ambulance, not to leave-and not to talk to anyone. "They said we might be need ed to rush a patient to another hospital. "After a while, Mr. (Vernonl Oneal (funeral home owner) drove up in a hearse with a casket. We took the casket into the room where the President's body was. He was covered with a sheet. "We waited while priests prayed and gave the last rites or something. Then Mrs. Ken nedy came in. "She looked at us and smiled, and started pulling on her ring finger. After a minute, she went across, lifted the sheet and put the ring on his finger. She was crying. Khrushchev May Seek Early Meet With LBJ "When she left, we picked up the President's body, put it in tlie casket and closed the lid. Then we started out. Someone stopped us and told us not to leave yet. We went back to tlie room. "Then they came and told us to go. When we got about half way across the emergency room, a priest stopped us, put a cross on the casket and prayed. "We took the casket to the hearse and loaded it in on one side. We let down the seat on the other side so Mrs. Kennedy could ride with the body. She smiled again and thanked us. She never did break down then. "When we closed the hearse, the secret servicemen took over. They drove it to the air port. We got it back there after the airplane left. "It was hard. We picked up the body and I kept thinking 'this is the President.' The feel in? was the same one I get when we have to pick up some little child that has been hurt or killed, or maybe a relative. "I never cried, but I had to choke back the tears. Dennis was about the same way. He's quiet anyway, but this time he didn't have anything to say. "Now I'm sorry I live in Dal las. I was born and raised here, but now I'm ashamed." Johnson Completely Recovered From 7955 Heart Attack NEW YORK UPH - Presi dent Lyndon B. Johnson has completely recovered from the heart attack he suffered eight years ago and will be a vigor ously healthy chief executive, according to heart specialists here. They pointed to the active lite Johnson lias led since his montlis - long recuperation in 1955, including tlie 1W0 election campaign as President Kenne dy's running mate. "You could have no better proof of his complete recov ery," said one professor of medicine who for reasons of medical ethics spoke anonym ously. He and other specialists deferred to Johnson's own phys ician, Dr. J. Willis Hurst of Emory University, Atlanta, who was en route from New Y'ork to Washingtcn. They could speak of what medical science knows in gen eral about recoveries from heart attacks. Each week, each month and each year the vic tim survives his personal disas ter, his heart muscle is healing itself and ridding itself of scar tisue. Some Remains Some scar tissue always re mains as a residue but it need not interfere with healthy heait function, they said. In the unan imous opinion of tlirre spe cialists, a man who has had a complete recovery cf years long duration can ace up to the most exacting tasks, includ ing that of being president. They pointed to the example of President Dwight D. Eisen hower, w ho suffered a heart at tack during his first term, went on to win re-election and still is vigorously healthy. To be sure, the man w ho has had one heart attack has dem onstrated "susceptibility." one specialist said. But. after lie has recovered, this "susceptibil ity can be minimized to zero by proper living." Johnson's phvsiclan, Dr. Hurst, has to'd colleagues that his patient "has devoted him self unstintmgly to his recov ery." At tlie time of his attack he weiglied well over 200 pounds. Now his weight is around ISO pounds which is con sidered an "optimum" weight for a man wlio is six feet three inches tall with heavy bone structure. Reject Shock Notion The specialists rejected the layman's idea thai a sudden emotional shock such as the assassinalicn of a beloved su perior and being elevated in a flash into (lie nation's highest office was "bad for the heart." It is not "bad1' for tlie heal thy heart, they said. The heal thy heart adjusts itself to all the situations of Jiving without any damage to itself. They were convinced on tlie evidence available to tliem that Johnson has a healthy heart since his attack occurred on July 2. 1955, and lie has luid many shocks since then, even though none could be in any way compara ble to the shock he had Friday. LONDON (UPD-Soviet Pre mier Nikita Khrushchev may seek an early personal meeting with President Johnson, high Communist diplomats said here Saturday. , . The Soviet leader was report ed most anxious to make sure that the diplomatic channel be tween Moscow and Washington remains open and tlie "dia logue" with the West continues under the Johnson administra tion. Khrushchev was reported deeply perturbed that Kennedy's death could signal a change of U.S. strategy. He had come to respect the late President and to realize he meant business. Khrushchev apparently is wor ried about Johnson's policy line. Diplomats recalled here the So viet leader's blunt reaction when lie first met Johnson during his visit to the United States. The Soviet leader greeted him by saying: "I do not know you, but 1 have read all your speeches and I do not like any of them."
