Coach Tommy Prothro's scrappy club meets the East Tornado Runners Top Pels The Klamath Falls Pelican cross-country runners fell to the Medford team at R e a m e s Country Club Tuesday by a score of 26-30, as the win ning Medford runner set a new course record. Medford's Greg S w a n s o n paced tlie pack in a time of 9:39 which was a new course record in that this course had not been used by the Pels pre viously. The Pelicans' Bob Scholl was second, with Medford runners third and fourth. Pelican run ners captured fifth and sixth and the last three places. The Pelicans return to action Saturday in the district meet at Medford starting at 10: 15 a.m. Results: Medford 26, Klamath Falls 30, Coast's top - ranked Syracuse Orangemen in Syracuse, N.Y., Saturday. Quarterback Gordon Queen, hitting his receivers with spo radic accuracy, completed 12 of 22 passes three for touchdowns in guiding his team to victory over Washington State. Queen has thrown for 10 touchdowns in five games this year. The indomitable Vern Burke caught his fifth and sixth touch down passes for the year. The Beaver end made six receptions against the Cougars to boost his season's total to 19. Oregon State pass protection was its best of the season, and the Beavers' defense functioned in good fashion. Washington State never seriously threatened after Oregon State built up a 16-6 halftime lead. Happy as the staff was to have beaten Washington State, no illusions are due about Syr acuse. The Orangemen blanked Penn State last Saturday, 9-0. And, too, it was Penn State that handed Oregon its only defeat of the season earlier at Port land. Assistant Coach Joe Francis, who scouted Syracuse, said, "They're big and strong, and they'll come straight at you." He pointed out that from tackle to tackle they average about 24S pounds; the ends 225 pounds. Their size is by far the largest Oregon State has faced this year, and their line is re portedly stronger than Washington's. Webfoots Third In Offense NEW YORK (UPI) - Oregon ranked third in total offense and fifth in scoring in NCAA team football statistics released here Tuesday. Oregon has rolled up an aver age of 401.6 yards per game with 2,008 yards in five contests. Navy was first with a 403.8 average. The Ducks have averaged 29.4 points. Utah State ranked first with 37 points per game. Individually, Oregon quarter back Bob Berry was seventh in total offense with 909 yards on 110 plays. Quarterback Roger Staubach of Navy led with 1,171 yards on 173 plays in five games. Big Came Hunters Look To Elk Season Opener Somewhere around 50.000 big game hunters will be heading for the high Umbered areas of the state this weekend for the big game animal many feel is the most challenging trophy ani mal on the North American con tinent. The Saturday opening, Oct. 26, sparks the opening of the gen eral elk season scheduled to run through Nov. 11 in the coastal units and through Nov. 24 in the Cascades and eastern Ore gon areas. Bull elk only will be legal game along the coast, Cas cades and northeastern Oregon elk country, while elk of ei ther sex may be taken on south eastern Oregon ranges. In the bull hunting areas of the state, the bag limit is one bull elk with antlers longer than the ears. The north coast area, which Includes the Clatsop, Wilson and Trask units, will be hunted on a permit basis only and hunters w ithout these permits must con fine their hunting to other areas. Only those hunters holding valid bull elk hunting permits for the above-named units may hunt in the north coast area. The Wil son unit hunt is limited to five days, Oct. 26 trough Oct. 30. The south coast areas will be open for bull elk hunting with a general season tag, but the Dixon unit is to be hunted on a permit basis only. State Runners Eye Cross-Country Go WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY Oregon high school cross country runners will be after the State A-l and A-2-B prep titles on the Bush Pasture 1.8 mile course in Salem Saturday, Nov. 2, 10:30 a.m. South Salem will defend the A-l title, while Recdsport will be after its third straight A-2-B crown. The Saxons, under coach Lou DeLoretto, also won in 1959 and 1960. Last year, 20 A-l teams from Whyis7Crown America's overwhelming choice in whiskey? There's one sure way to find out. the eight districts and nine A-2-B squads .participated as well as numerous individual entrants from other schools. For. the fourth straight year, Willamette University is host ing the affair under the guid ance of John Lewis, university athletic director. Albany High's ace, Dave Wil born, appears to be the man to beat in A-l ranks, as he finished second last year behind Hills boro's Wendell Cox, who has since graduated. Third place fin isher Terry Kishpaugh, Marsh all Portland i and sixth place man Terry Thompson, South Sa lem, will likely press Wilborn. DeLoretto indicated that his Saxons will get their stiffest test from South Eugene. Grant, North Eugene and Wilson. Recdsport's Gene Faircloth will be back to defend his in dividual A-2-B title and lead his team's hopes for another cham pionship. Units open for general bull elk hunting along the coastal area Include the Willamette, Alsea, Siuslaw, Elkton, Melrose, Tioga and Powers. All other coastal units are closed to general sea son elk hunting. In the Cascades and north eastern Oregon, units available to bull elk hunters include Hood River, Wasco, Santiam, McKen zie, aiotolius, Deschutes, Fort Rock, Keno, Rogue, Columbia Basin, Walla Walla, Wenaha, Sled Springs, Chesnimnus, Snake River, Imnaha, Mlnam, Catherine Creek, Baker, Stark ey, Ukiah, Heppner, Desolation, and Umatilla. Elk hunters after either-scx elk during the general season will have available tl)e Wheel er, Grizzly, Ochoco, Maury, Northside, Keating, Lookout Mountain, Murderer's Creek, Beulah, Malheur River, and Silvies units to try their luck. Clatsop and Wilson unit per mit holders are reminded that the season docs not open until 9 on the opening morning of the season. Hunters are urged to check tlie regulations in the big game synopsis for tagging big game and other requirements while the animal is in transit, in the field, or transferred to anoth er person. The antlers with eyes and scalp attached must remain with tlie animal taken, while in the field or in transit from the hunting area. Rifles that do not meet tlie following minimum require ments are not legal for elk hunt ing. Minimum requirements in clude a rifle of at least .25-inch bore diameter, and developing at least 1,220 foot pounds of en ergy at 100 yards. Elk hunting rifles must meet both of these requirements. Oregon Tech Draws Pacific In Tip-Off Willamette University will again host the finals of tlie fifth annual NAIA Tip-Off Basketball Tourney, but for tlie first time in the history of tlie meet, Pacific University in Forest Grove will host two nights of action. Eight teams are entered in the three-day meet, Dec. 6-7, with the format as follows: At Pacific, Portland State vs. Lew is and Clark and Oregon Tech vs. Pacific; at Willamette, Lin field vs. Oregon College and Eastern Oregon vs. Willamette in first round action. Second round play continues at the two sites with winners advancing to tlie championship bracket. On Saturday, Dec. 7, all eight squads will play at Willamette starting at S p.m. The Salem Exchange Club will again sponsor the tourney which signals the start of pre season play for tlie Northwest Conference and Oregon Collegi ate Conference teams participat ing.
