Hurt Boxer Is Critical BALTIMORE (UPI I - Ernie Knox, a 28-year-old Baltimore hod carrier and parl-lime heavynciRht boxer, remained unconscious and in critical con dition today at Provident Hos pital. Knox lapsed into a coma sev eral hours after being knocked out by veteran heavyweight Wayne Bctliea of New York in (he ninth round of a bout al the Coliseum Monday night. Neurosurgeons who performed emergency brain surgery on Knox Tuesday gave him "little chance of survival." While Knox was battling for his life, Baltimore Mayor Theo dore R. McKeldin said he would do everything in his power to prevent professional boxing matches from being booked at the city's new $14 million Civic Center. McKeldin said that under present conditions, pro boxing is "terrible and brutal." He termed the match between Knox and Bethca in which Bcthea held a 27-pound weight advantage a "mismatch." Knox took a tremendous beat ing at the liands of Bcthea, who punished him with right upper cuts and left hooks for the nine rounds the fight lasted.
