u A Brims 1 (B(MljM'' i1963 Oregon Tech Owls face Strong SOCRed Raiders Last Saturday night it was a two-year grid dominance by the Portland State Vikings which the Oregon Teeh Owls attempted to end. The attempt failed. This Saturday night at Ash land, it's another two-year win ning streak owned by the Ow! opponent as Ron Pheister's Ore gon Tech team faces the strong Southern Oregon Red Raiders. It was the 1960 edition of the Owls the last Oregon Tech team to top the Red Raiders as a slim 21-19 victory was recorded. It was this same team which last defeated the Portland State eleven. The I960 Owls went on to un defeated season as they took the second of two Oregon Colle giate Conference grid champion ships. The last win by the Owls over tne Red Raiders is recalled more vividly through the 52-0 pasting handed the Oregon Tech eleven by Ai Akins' Raiders last year. And, this year, the cards are again stacked heavily in favor of the Ashland club. The Red Raiders take a 2-0 league record into the contest, with an overall record of 3-1. This is opposed to the Owl rec ord in league action of 0-1 and an overall mark of 1-3. One common opponent may be compared in Weber Junior College, with the Raiders losing SET FOR RAIDERS Oregon Tech's Jack Kutter, a 256 pound taclslo from Portland, will battle the Southern Ore gon Red Raiders at Ashland Saturday night in the Owls second Oregon Collegiate Conference fray. The Red Raiders are 4-1 for the year and 2-0 in conference action. National Manager Of Year? Who Else: Walter Alston NEW YORK fUPI! - Wolt Alston, the strong, silent man from Darrtown, Ohio, who led the Los Angeles Dodgers to the National League pennant and an unprecedented four-game sweep of the New York Yan kees in the World Series, was named NL manager of the year today by United Press Interna tional. The selection of the 52-ycar-, old Alston was made by a enm mitie of 24 baseball experts representing every city in the major leagues. Seventeen of the experts chose Alston and the other seven named Johnny Keane of the St. Louis Cardi nals. A long time Dodger "organi zation man" who struck out in the only major league appear ance he ever made at bat, Al ston now has led the Dodgers to the only three world cham pionships in their history. He piloted them to their first and only title in Brooklyn in 1953 and led them to their first world championship in Los An geles in 1939. To say the Oregon Tech coaching staff was unhappy with the Owis' performance against the Vikings would be an under statement, "It was without question the worst game they have played this year and possibly in the past two years both on offense and defense," was Pheister's critical comment. On the ground the Red Raid ers have another league stat leader in halfback Doug Olsen, 180-pounder from Eugene. Olsen is leading the scoring parade in the circuit with 31 points on three touchdowns and 13 PATs.
