Baker Fails As Detroit Whips Rams LOS ANGELES (UP!) - Coach Harland Svare cast about today for a cure to the the goal post "allergy" that spoiled the season debut of his Los Angeles Rams Saturday, hoping to find it before this weekend's encounter with the Washington Redskins. The Rams penetrated deep into their opponent Detroit Lions' ter ritory on several occasions and once got as close as the 1-yard line. But they were kept from scoring by a stiff Detroit defense that forced them to settle for a safety in Saturday's 23-2 defeat before 49,342 fans in Memorial Coliseum. Svare also was without a de finite starting quarterback, with talented rookie Terry Baker who started for the Rams in the De troit encounter still plagued by a "balloon" aerial that was en thusiastically grabbed by Lion in terceptors. Baker had three passes inter cepted, one setting up the Lions' first score and another run back 70 yards for a touchdown as the Lions tallied their sixth straight league play victory over Los Angeles. - Roman Gabriel came into the quarterback slot for the Rams in the second half, but by that time the Lions, ahead 20-0, brazenly rushed the backfield, ruining Ga briel s aerial eflorts. Roman managed to drive the Rams to Detroit's 1-yard line, but missed on a rollout and had to settle for a safety when Lindon Crow caught halfback Larry Fer guson in the end zone. Gabriel connected with a 58- yard pass to Dick Bass to get as close as the 8, and once again drove US the 4, but each time' Detroit's defense stiffened. HERALD AND NEWS. Kim lath Falls. Momentum is entirely on their side. By bowling over the Braves twice Sunday, 3-2 and 5-0, the Cardinals ran their winning streak to 10 games and now have won 19 of their last 20. The Dodgers show a '13-7 log during that same stretch and while that record isn't anything to be ashamed of it is respon sible for cutting their lead from a once comfortable 74 games. The Dodgers still are slight favorites," said one national odds- maker. They won t be any longer, though, if they lose to night." Lew Burdette pitched St. Louis to victory in the opener when he held his former teammates to six hits, including Hunk Aaron's 42nd homer. Aaron's blow, however, was negated by Bill White's 27th homer with one on in the second inning and Ken Boycr's 23rd off loser Bob IHendley in the fourth, Ray Sadecki blanked the Braves on five liils in the night cap for his 10th victory and the fifth shutout by a Cardinal pitch cr in their last eight games. Tim McCarver and Julian Javier each singled home a run off loser Den ny ILemaster in (lie second inning and that was really all Sadecki needed. Broglio vs. Podres Cardinal manager Johnny Kcane nominated Ernie Broglio il6-8 for tonight's game and; Dodger manager Walt Alston picked Johnny Podres (13-10). Af ter that, the Cards will go with Curt Simmons and Sib Gibson while the Dodgers will follow with Sandy Koufax and Pete Richer! Alston said he was "glad yes terday's game is out of our sys tem." The Dodger manager didn't blame anyone for the defeat even though catcher Johnny Roseboro committed three passed balls that led to as many runs, shortstop Maury Wills and third baseman Ken JIcMullen each made an er ror and Don Drysdale sutlered his first loss in Philadelphia in four years. Dallas Green won his sixth game for the Phils with a five- hitter, giving up the Dodgers' only run On Tommy Davis' 15th homer in the fourth. The loss was Drysdalc's .17th against the same number of wins. In other National League games, the Colts completed four-game sweep of the Mets by beating them twice, 6-4 and 6-0, the Reds clipped the Cubs, 3-1 and the Giants crushed the Pi rates, 13-5. the Athletics, 5-3, the Orioles nipped the Tigers, 2-1 and the Indians beat the Angels, 6-3. Rain washed out the White Sox-Sena tors game. Hurls Four-Hitter Dick Farrell held the Mots hit less for six innings in the opener and then wound up with a Jour-I hitter for his 13th victory. The Mets ended a string of 39 straight scoreless innings when they ral lied for four runs with the aid of Choo Choo Coleman's two-run homer in the seventh. , THEY CARRY FLAG HOPES St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Ernie Broglio, left, (16-8) faces Los Angeles Dodger Johnny Podres, right, 113-10) tonight in the opening game of a three-game series in St. Louis that may well decide the National League pen nant. The Cards, thanks to a double win Sunday coupled with a Dodger loss, trail the league-leading Dodgers by only one game. The Cards have won 10 straight and 19 : of their last 20 games. (Only games scheduled) By United Press International . Start the World Scries Whitey Ford is ready. That was the general feeling to day of the New York Yankees, who are just going through the motions waiting for the Dodgers and the Cardinals to settle the National League race. It doesn't matter which team wins the right to oppose the Yankees. Manager Ralph Houk Is almost certain to choose Ford as his pitcher for the opening game of the series at Yankee Stadium Oct. 2. Ford was Houk's mound choice for the last two Series openers against the Cincinnati Reds In 1961, and the San Francisco Gi ants last year and he won Ihcm both. So there doesn't seem to be any reason for the Yankee pilot to depart from tradition, es pecially since Whitey has won more Series games (10) than any pitcher In history. Like the Milwaukee Braves Warren Spahn, Ford seems to be getting better with age. The light hearted left-hander notched his 23rd victory Sunday, allowing only two singles in subduing the Minnesota Twins, 2-1. Clete Boycr's two-run single in the second inning off loser Lee Stange gave Ford all the margin he needed against the Twins. Zoilo Vcrsalles scored on a force- out in the fourth to ruin Whitey's bid for his fourth shutout of the campaign. The loss dropped the Tw ins a game back of the Chicago White Sox in their battle for second place. The Baltimore Orioles edged tlie Detroit Tigers, 2-1; the Boston Red Sox clubbed the Kan sas City Athletics, 5-3, and tlie Cleveland Indians downed the Los Angeles Angels, 6-3. The While Sox at Washington game was rained out. The Tigers engineered the American League's first triple play since 1960 in tlie fifth inning but the Orioles had pushed across two runs earlier in the frame one on a wild pitch by Frank Lary to win the game. Milt Pappas, with relief help from Stu Miller, picked up his 16th victory. Felix Mantilla's two-run. two- out homer in the ninth inning off John Wyatt powered the Red Sox to a comeback victory.
