The most important change i contract play in the last IS years has been the emergence of the lead ot low from three small as standard expert procedure, rather than the book lead from the top. A few experts started to do this right after World War II. As the years went by more and more joined the fold until today only a few die-hards stick to the book procedure. Furthermore, the rec ords seem to show that those die- hards aren't really experts any more since their names never ap pear among tournament winners. It seems that it is about time for the public to take up and use this improvement in playing tactics. I have used it in my ta ble of leads in "Win at Bridge with Oswald Jacoby" and have made it standard in the Jacoby system. Of course, I have been using it for many years in my own play. Now take a look at the North and South hands and the bidding West opens the deuce of spades East takes his ace and returns the six. If your opponent had led the top of three small, you would play the king of spades. You are reasonably sure that if East held seven spades he would have bid a second time over North's two clubs, so that West is marked with the queen of spades for his opening lead. So you play the king and West's queen blocks the suit. But you suppose that West did not hold the queen, but opened low from three small. You must finesse tlie jack because the odds arc that East holds the queen. West takes his queen, returns the suit and down you go. Work at Ames covers a broad range, includ ing: Problems of atmospheric re-entry. Space environment simulators. Guid ance, control and navigation of spacecraft. Biological hazards of space. In the last field, Ames has called upon indus try to help study a program to launch a series of "biosatellites." Cargoes of animals and plants would be recovered after orbital flights of 3 to 30 days to determine the effects ot weightlessness on the biological rhythms and cellular processes of living organisms. In another project, "meteoroids" have been shot against a simulated lunar surface to study the possible spray hazard to astronauts walking on the moon. One. Ames project will soon be tested in full scale flight. This is a wingless, piloted space craft (first panel) called the M-2 "lifting body" that could be maneuvered more than 1,000 miles to a landing point after a space mission and land horizontally like an airplane. The first piloted tests will take place this year at NASA's Flight Research Center, Edwards, Calif. Aeronautics is still very important at Ames. Among other things, designs for supersonic commercial transports are being developed. The Bell X-14A (center panel), a highly suc cessful VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) jet, is making valuable contributions not only to aeronautical but to space research. The X-14A is being used to simulate landing phases of a mission to the moon. Like all of NASA's centers, Ames is contrib uting to the Apollo moon program. In third panel, an engineer tests an Apollo capsule and attached escape tower mounted in one of the center's wind tunnels. The tower will ride with the Apollo through the lower, denser part of the atmosphere, then be discarded. NEXT: Lewis Research Center MOUNT SHASTA - Jack Salo, Mount Shasta recreation director, has announced the summer pro gram will begin June 24 and ex tend through Aug. 16. A schedule of bus transportation, available for most functions, will be an nounced this week, as well as a complete day to day schedule of activities. Mrs. Virginia Aikin will teach arts and crafts from V a.m. to 12 noon daily. Charles Birimisa will act as playground supervisor and Dan Aquila will be the lodge and pavilion supervisor. Dixie Buller- wcll will be in charge of the tiny tot group, and her duties will in clude playground activities, a story hour, and treasurer hunts. Charles Rosecrantz will be direc tor in charge during the absence of Salo, who is attending summer school in Denver. From July 22 to Aug. 2, tlie regular recreation program at the park will be interrupted for swim ming lessons at the Dunsmuir pool. Registration forms arc available at the elementary school and high school. They should be completed and returned immedi-1 ntely in order to finish class or ganization. Bill Sowe and Rose crantz will head the swimming school. The Hi-Teens and Junior Dudes and Daisies groups have plans for I a busy summer schedule as well. ! The pay increases will go into effect July 1 if approved by the Emergency Board. The commission's recommenda tions were approved in pricniplc by the 1965 legislature, which set aside $4.2 million with the Emer gency Board for this purpose. The increases, approved by the commission Wednesday, will take $3.8 million from tlie general fund, and about $2,9 million from dedicated funds. Kducation Separate Ralph Minear of the Depart ment of Finance and Administra tion, said the commission's action, combined with increases approved by the legislature, will provide more pay for all state employes except higher education academic personnel, and the one-third of 1 1 the classified people. ACE TV TIPS A quiet but deadly advertising program is being instituted by some larger Manufact urers of PRINTED CIRCUIT type TV sets, they have two objectives, to foster lagging public acceptance of their product, and, to degrade and destroy the superior concept of handwired and handcrafted TV chassis. These manufacturers detest the phrase "PRINTED CIRCUIT." The public generally knows what that is, and that's not good. (For the Manufacturers) Therefore they love to hide behind superlatives such as "Sealed Circuitry," "Precision Etched Circuitry," "Space Age Circuitry" and Ad Infinitum. But, a goat by any name SMELLS the same. We have said it before, and we stand on it again: At the present time there is only ONE reason for the use of the Printed Circuit in TV sets IT IS CHEAP TO STAMP OUT! And, it's a shame it hasn't been. During World War II Zenith pioneered in the development and use of the Printed Cir cuit. When used with lightweight tronsistors ond low voltage and low heat components, they work fine, such as in missile compon ents, hearing aids and transistor radios. We can't help but wonder, if handwiring is so outdated, why do these Printed Circuit TV manufacturers still use handwiring to con nect the printed circuit boards to the rest of the TV components? Want to know? They haven't found a cheaper way to do if. ZENITH has been checkrated a BEST BUY in the leading consumers magazine for the post five years. NO OTHER manufacturer can claim that record.
