She vowed later that she would not support any compromise on this issue if the oil industry were permitted to escape scot-free from the tougher tax treatment Ken nedy had prescribed for it. The action was taken as the committee worked behind closed doors on Kennedy's controversial program for revising the tax structure and cutting tax rates to provide a net reduction of $10.4 billion in individual and corpora tion income taxes. Reversing an earlier decision, the committee Monday afternoon agreed to levy an estimated $50 million a year in new taxes on the oil and gas industry. Estimated recent Treasury esti mates of the impact Kennedy's recommendations would have had on the industry have run about $200 million.
