The action was taken as the
committee worked behind closed
doors on Kennedy's controversial
program for revising the tax
structure and cutting tax rates to
provide a net reduction of $10.4
billion in individual and corpora
tion income taxes.
Reversing an earlier decision,
the committee Monday afternoon
agreed to levy an estimated $50
million a year in new taxes on
the oil and gas industry.
Estimated recent Treasury esti
mates of the impact Kennedy's
recommendations would have had
on the industry have run about
$200 million.
The committee's decision in
creased chances that Chairman
Wilbur D. Mills, D-Ark., will now
be able to persuade Mrs. Grif
fiths to go part-way with the
