May 24, 1963 United States Can Play Spoiler In Cage Tourney RIO DE JANEIRO (UPI) -The United States, one of the pro- tournament favorites, was ready to play the role of spoiler today in an attempt to salvage Its repu tation in the world amateur bas ketball championships. The Yanks have no chance to win the title, but can prevent Brazil from clinching the crown when the two teams meet Satur day on the final day of the tournament. Brazil broke a first place tie with Russia and remained the only unbeaten squad by turning back tlie Soviet Union 00-79 in a near-riotous game Thursday night. Earlier, the United States finally lived up to its advance billing by romping over Italy 101-73 for its third triumph in five games. Only tlie United States is now in a position to stop the Brazilians from completing a perfect six game sweep, and if they are suc cessful they can leave the door open for cither Russia or Yugo slavia to create a deadlock. Yugoslavia is solid favorite to defeat France tonight and boost its record to 4-1, the same as Russia's. The two Soviet bloc nations then meet on Saturday wiih the winner having a chance at tlie championship should the United States upset Brazil. Brazilian coach Togo Soares engaged in several vehement ar guments with referee Julio San chez Padilla of Uruguay Wednes day night and was ejected from the game at the start of the sec ond half for his aggressive atti tude. Rinaldi kept Europe's 175-pound crown Thursday night on a 15 round decision over Schoeppner liefore 30.0(10 wildly cheering fans here in the outdoor Flaminio Sta dium. Each boxer weighed 173 'i pounds. Before the fight both Schoepp ner, 30. and Rinaldi, 28, had promised to retire in case of de feat. And today Erich announced: "I'll certainly keep my promise. League Commissioner Joe Foss. who moves his league headquar ters from here to New York a week from today, announced the complete 56-game schedule, which includes 16 night games the same number as last year. Tlie Kansas City team, which won the AFL title last season when it was known as the Dallas Texans. will also figure in the on ly two non-Sunday day games among the 40 daylight contests listed. The erstwhile Texans will host Denver for the Thanksgiving Day feature and will meet the New York Jets in a nationally televised day game in Kansas City Satur day, Dec. 14. (UPD -The Big Six track and field champion ships will be staged at University of California Saturday with Uni versity of Southern California Tro jans the odds-on favorite to win H. But much of the spotlight will be on a couple of athletes repre senting other schools. Brian Stern berg of University of Washington is one of the world's greatest pole vaulters and held the world re cord at 16 feet, 5 inches for a few hours earlier this spring. Dave Weill of Stanford is the NCAA discus throwing champion and is about ready to take a crack at the 200-foot mark. But the Trojans have the bal ance of power. They have such outstanding men as Rex Cawley in the 440 dash and hurdles; Julio Marin, ace three - milcr; Brian Polkinghorne and Bob Pierce, who could finish one-two in the hurdles: and Lew Hoyt, the seven foot high jumper. Among the other oustanding con tenders for crowns will be Harry McCalla. Stanford's great milcr: Dave Archibald, California quar-ter-milcr: and the incomparable C. K. Yang of UCLA. Yang, who holds the world re cord in the decathlon, has a sore back, so he'll probably pass up the pole vault, where he has cleared 16 feet. But he plans to compete in the javelin, high hurdles. 220 or 100 yard dash, the broad jump and lead off for UCLA in the mile relay. The weather forecast is for cool and cloudy. However, there is no rain anticipated. Wright, Pung Share Lead DALLAS (UPI) Jackie Pung, playing her first competitive golf since suffering a whiplash injury in an auto crash in February, swung alongside favorite Mickey Wright in front of the Dallas Civitan Women's Open tournament field today. The 41-year-old Hawaiian-born Mrs. Pung and the 28-ycar-old Miss Wright, carried three-stroke leads into the second round after clipping four strokes off par with their 67's Thursday over the Glen Lakes Country Club course. Their closest challenger among the 42-player contingent was tiny Clifford Ann Creed, the one-time Alexandria. La., schoolteacher who is in her first year as a pro. Girls Voted Out At Tempe TEMI'E. Ariz. (UPD There will be no girls on the college teams in the Western Athletic Conference iWACl. A proposal to allow women to participate in varsity sports, such as a provision in tlie southeastern conference, was rejected Thurs day in the summer meeting of conference athletic directors. The university officials, in other action: Approved the 16 football and l'.'i4-65 basketball schedules. Voted against adding new- sports to the present program. Decided that gate receipts at jchampionships events will go to the league oflicc if there is a prof it. If the event loos money, the host will take the loss.
