Batters have belted 11 homers off the 20-year-old righthander thus far this year. But Krausse. who was signed by the Kansas City Athletics for- $125,000 twol years ago, proved Thursday that he now can zip the baseball just where he wants it around the coi ners of home plate. He set down fence-busting San Diego 1-0 on two hits a third inning double by Jim Saul and an eighth-inning single by Rog Al varez. Padre batters had crashed Portland pitching for eight home runs in tw'o previous games. Krausse, w ho leads the PCL in home-runs-allowed, hurled his fin est game of the young season. He struck out four and walked two to even his record at 3-3. His earned run average of 7.05, one of the highest in the league, nose-dived as a result. The 6-foot-l Krausse also scored the game's only run in the eighth alter ne singled and moved to third on Jay Hankins' double. A walk loaded the bases and Jim Hughes scored Krausse with a perfect squeeze bunt. In other games, two-run homers by Lou Klimchock and Tommy Aaron gave Denver a 12-6 win over Salt Lake City, Dallas-Ft. Worth tallied seven runs in the first two innings to rip Oklahoma City 10-3 and the San Francisco Giants swatted four home runs in downing their farm team Tacoma 6-1. Amazing Denver won its fifth in a row and vaulted from last to third place in the Southern Division ahead of Oklahoma City and Salt Lake. The Bears scored six runs in the seventh to come from a 3-4 deficit. Billy Cowan, the leading hitter in the PCL with a .364 average, had put Salt Lake ahead 4-1 when he smacked a three-run homer in the fifth. Dallas-Ft. Worth scored three runs in the first and four in the second to wrap up its game early against the 89ers. Joe Christian drove in three of the Texas runs with two doubles and a single. Teammate George Banks went 4-for-5, including his fourth home run. In the "lory years for both, cir ca 1950 through 1955, Roberts won 138 games (or the Philadelphia Phillies and Hodges hit 204 home runs lor the Brooklyn Dodgers. In man-toman competition, however, Roberts held a wide edge over Hodges, yielding only six ot those 204 Homers Dy Hodges during those seasons. . It's a full decade later and Roberts is a 36-ycar old pitcher lunging on with guile and savvy while Hodges is embarking on a new career as a major league manager. Starts Managerial Career Big Gil made his managerial debut with the Washington Sena tors Thursday night and the wheel or fate ruled that Mr, Rob erts would be on the mound for the rival Bullimore Orioles. The league, the circumstances and the players were different but the re sult was pretty much the same Roberts topped Hodges by pitch ing tile Orioles to a 6-0 victory over the Senators.
