PAISLEY-Top honors of the Paisley High School senior class were achieved by Terry Ann Fos ter, valedictorian, and Linda Pen iiigton, salutatorian. Terry Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Foster ot Summer Lake, maintained a grade aver age of 3.35 for four years of high school. She has been active in student affairs, serving as class secretary for two years and as student body secretary and treas urer in her junior and senior years. She was selected a carni val princess and is participating in the annual school play this year. A Girl Scout for 10 years, Terry Ann has been an assistant leader for the last two years. Hunting next fall was tentative ly banned in Mydoc, Lassen, and eastern Shasta and Siskiyou counties at a meeting of the com mission in San Francisco. . "This bears out the contention of he Northern Counties Conserva tion Association and alimate groups that commission policies in :he past five years have decimat. ed the deer herds beyond season al recovery," Lambert stated. However, sportsmen in Northern California also regard the proposal with some distrust. It mav be a move to establish hunter control after a period of closure," Paul Carter, club secre tary and statistician, pointed out. He said local sports groups will fight for the right to preserve hunting as a sport and not as a harvest. They will vigorously op pose moves to limit hunters and prescribe hunting areas. While local sportsmen have de manded curtailment of the deer kill as a conservation measure. they did not advocate such a dras tic step as complete closure, the two men said when interviewed The demand has been for return to a sensible deer season, clos ing not later than Oct. 20, and hunting limited to bucks of three points or better. "We appreciate the realization of the Fish and Game Commission that desperate measures arc needed to preserve the present remnants of the mule deer herd in Northern California. We have contended all along that the lengthened season has been the onl basis for the heavy deer kill reported in district l3, and the deer population is actually ap proaching extinction," Lambert explained. The latest step ol the Uunsmuir Rod and Gun Club is to estab lish elk in the Mumbo Basin in western Siskiyou County. A request has been made to the fish and Game Commission to allow the capture and transport of surplus elk from the Humboldt County herd. The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors has approved the move and provided lunds trom ac cumulated game fine money. The population of Silver Lake and environs is now slightly more than 200. he truck, a 1948 Diamond T model, has a capacity of 1250 gal lons and will pump 250 gallons per minute. Purchased for $3200 at Canbv, Ore., it is equipped with siren, flashing light, exten sion ladder, and axe. "We still need hand extinguishers for the back for use on small fires," point ed out Bill Barracks. The proposal would have raised salaries of the two officials from $15,000 to $17,500. The committee approved a sc ries of budgets, including $10 mil lion for the state police.
