Kenneth G. Mclntyre of Stalcn Island is one of my regular cor respondents. Ken seems to have more than his share of troubles at the bridge table and most of liis letters concern tragedies. Ken writes, "I don't suppose you approve of my partner's heart response, his pass to one spade, or his double of two hearts, but we wound up with a top score." I don't approve of the one heart response. East should respond one diamond since there is no future for his side In hearts un less West can bid the suit. Then East might have tried one no ' trump instead of a pass. Finally his double of two hearts might havo proved suicidal. After all South can make three h e a M s against any defense, but now sec what happened to South. Ken opened the ace and an other club. He hoped East would be able to trump the second lead of the suit. South was In dummy and tried the heart finesse. Ken made his singleton king and led a third club which East was able to ruff Now East led a trump and careful defense held South to five trumps and a diamond plus the one club he had already made Proving that nothing succeeds like success, and that sometimes bridge Is about as uneventful as titling in a rocking chair on the edge of a precipice. But the official, Brainerd Holmes, rejected a congressman's contention this put the United States two years behind Russia in the race to the moon. He said this country actually may be ahead. ' Holmes was questioned by a I House space subcommittee about ', newspaper reports that new diffi culties with the Gemini capsule " and the Titan II launcher have pushed back until mid-19fi5 the target date for the launching. Holmes said it had been decided there .was a need for two un manned test flights, rather than one as previously planned, before two astronauts are hurled into space aboard the Gemini capsule. He said this might delay the manned shot by six months. Rep. James G. Fulton, R-Pa,, .. said his calculations show that the . United States already is 18 months behind Russia in the effort to put a man on tlie moon. He estimated that the new Gemini delay would put this country be hind by two years. 1 don't know that we are fall ing behind Russia," Holmes re plied. "I'm not sure we're not aliead of Russia." , Fulton shot back that this was the first time he had heard any body soy that we were ahead in the moon race. "I didn't say that." Holmes said. "I say that if all they are doing Is what they have shown which I doubt we re far ahead. But I have no knowledge about hat they are doing under ground."
