The posters are a way of reminding everyone that April is the month designated for the American Can cer Society Fund Drive. In observance of the occasion, Mayor Veatch has proclaimed April as Cancer Society Drive Month. The drive ends May 30. Camp Sites Dispensed By Automatic Machines The schedule for operation ofday following purchase. New tick ticket-vending machines for col lection of a service fee at 28 of! 850 campgrounds in the national forests df Oregon and Washing' ton was announced today by the U.S. Forest Service. Ticket-vending machines were tested at two campgrounds last vear. and this year Xlio charge program will be extended to 26j other campgrounds wnere laciii tics are well developed and use is heavy. Picnicking, boat-launch. ing, and other day-use activities at the 28 sites remain free of charge, according to J. Herbert Stone, regional forester. The ticket-vending system works this way: The fee for overnight camping is $1 per day. The vend ing machine, with instructions, will be located near the camp ground entrance. The prospective camper drives In, selects a camp unit, and returns to .the vend. Ing machine. Ha inserts two 50 cent pieces into the machine, which dispenses a dated ticket. The camper then fills out ' the back of the ticket and Inserts It Into his ticket box, which Is lo cated near the road at his camp' site. If he lacks proper change, he leaves' a note for the attendant, who will contact him and make change. Receipts will go to the U.S Treasury, as do other national for est-receipts, with 25 per cent re turning to the counties in which the national forest lands arc lo cated. The ticket machines will op erate through Sept. 2. Opening dates may vary slightly from schedule at some camp- grounds because of construction of new facilities. Cook said he had prepared a resolution calling for an Interim study by the legislature of "the adequacies of existing tourist fa cilities." "Tourism is one of Oregon's largest industries, bringing mil lions of dollars into the state each year." he said. "Unfortunately, our facilities are no longer adequate. An in terim study would point out the importance of this industry and better inform the legislative and executive branches of the need for additional activities in the field." Cook proposes a review of ad vertising programs, state parks, coordination between government units involved, federal aid pro grams, and related subjects.
