The Saturday Evening Post unled an Atlanta insurance sales- nan named George Burnett as laying lie was accidentally hooked into the Butts-Bryanl tel ephone conversation. The maga line quoted Burnett as saying Bulls gave Georgia team secrets In Bryant during the conversa tion. The listener said he jotted notes on a pad. The Post story, entitled "The Story of a College Football Fix." touched off several investigations. Butts and Bryant issued denials thai they had conspired to rig the ball game. Butts sued the Post for $10 million. I Georgia Ally. Gen. Eugene Cook opened an investigation. So did an Alabama legislative com mittee. Investigators from the U. S. Burnett stuck to his story. Releases Inquiry's Results Cook Tuesday released the re sults of an investigation he said showed that Butts did indeed di vulge vital team secrets. Cook also reported to Georgia Gov. Carl E. Sanders that Butts w as in con tact with known gamblers prior to the game he is charged with rigging-Cook further disclosed that Butts had amassed a net fortune of approximately $206,000 although his salary was $16,000 a year. Cook said that all members of the Georgia coaching staff but one were questioned as to the value of the information Butts allegedly gave Bryant and that six have given signed statements that such information "could have affected Ihe outcome of the game." William II. Schroder, Butts' attorney, "emphatically denied" the findings of Cook's investiga tion and said it was "quite ob vious" to him the attorney gen eral was determined to find Butts guilty. SayN Report Inaccurate "The report is replete with in accuracies and untruths, Schro der said. Sanders told a news conference following release of Cook's report that there was in the investiga tion so far "nothing to indicate the violation of any criminal sta tute" by Butts. The governor ordered the attor ney general's report filed as an official document of the execu tive department and sent a copy to Southeastern Conference Com missioner Bernie Moore who is conducting his own investigation. Warns Of Trouble Butts was in Philadelphia in February on a business trip. Burnett was an employe. "V'ou might be in trouble when vou get back," Carmichael told Butts and then related the con versation Burnett said he over heard. "I told Mr. Carmichael I hadn't said anything wrong," Butts said This week Bulls said it again "I'm innocent. I have done no thing wrong." Butts. Bryant and Burnett took ie detector tests in an elfort to prove their versions were correct All three passed, according to the individuals conducting the tests. Burnett took the lest twice. Bry ant and Butts, on the advice of their lawyers, quit after the first "clearance." Burnett said he was willing to take a truth serum. For a while the authentic ity of lie detector tests which are not usually allowed into courtroom was questioned. One of the lie detector ques tions asked Burnett: "Are you trying to frame Wally Butts and Bear Bryant; Answer: No. One of the questions put to Butts in his test: "In your 35 years of coaching football have you ever 'connived to fix a game? Answer: No. Confined to Bed Butts, worn haggard hy business reverses, physical illness and emotional weariness, was sent to bed several times in those first days of the investigation. Was the "little round man who had produced seven bowl teams and four Southeastern Conference champions in his 22 years at Georgia the tough but honest "Mr. Football" of the Southeast? Other coaches in and out of the South profess openly they do this sort of thing all the time and find nothing unethical about it One Southeastern Conference coach told L'PI: "I am certain mat most coaches know more about the opposition, both offen sively and defensively, than they know about their own team. This is due to thorough scouting re ports and study of game films." Butts has put it this way "Hccruiting. basic fundamentals, sense of timing and discipline win football games. Actual plays don t make any difference." Kefuses To Talk butts, once one ol the more gregarious SKC coaches, has re fused to talk publicly about the conversation he had with Bryant This was nn the advice of his lawyer, William Schroder, who will not acknowledge there was such a conversation. II is against federal law tor a third person to report the con tents of a telephone conversation between two parties. Schroder al so is expected to contend in pre trial conlercnccs over Butts' $10 million libel suit that testimony about any such conversation would be inadmissible. The actual trial of the Butts libel case against the Post, if it Terry Baker Has 'Day' In Senate SALEM fUPIi-It was "Terry Baker Day" at the legislature Tuesday and the star athlete thanked the Senate, the House. ;ind packed galleries for a "won derful tribute." His mother, Mrs. Laura Baker, football coach Tommy Prothro, and basketball coach "Slats" Gill shared honors with the Oregon Stale senior. Baker appeared in both the Sen ate and the House. He heard tributes to his athletic career and to his academic achievements, and spoke briefly. A ghllermg array of his tro phies was on display in the Ro- tiindu, with two officers standing guard. Sen. Walter Leth, R-Salcm, in troduced Baker in the Senate as 'the most widelv honored and decorated in college athletic his tory. Candid About Call University of Alabama presi dent Krank Rose is candid about the telephone call. Rose wrote Dr. O. C. Ader- hold, president of the University of Georgia, that Butts called Bry ant on the day in question to warn him of a possible rules in fraction involving the Alabama defense. He said Bryant received no secrets from Butts. "The 'Alabama i defenses were changed and coach Bryant was gratelul to coach Butts for call ing this to his attention," Rose said in his letter. "Coach Bryant told me that calling this to his attention may have favored the University of Alabama team but he doubted it seriously." Calls Are Common In his capacity as a member of the Southeastern Conference rules committee. Butts often tele phones other coaches. Most of those calls. Butts once said, were to clarity rules. The former Geor gia coach also was a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules com mittee and occasionally had tele phone conversations with coaches outside the conference about rules. One of these conversations in 1962, lasting for almost an hour, was with Florida State coach Bill Peterson, who recalled that only routine and official matters were discussed. The case against Butts, and to a lesser degree Bryant, seemed to hinge on whether the informa tion exchanged in their telephone conversation was more than just routine that it actually was so detailed and specific that a game outcome could be influenced. One question raised was whether he knew enough about football to know what Butts and Bryant were talking about. Burnett, according to the Post, was trying to make a local tele phone call in Atlanta to a friend named Milton Flack. He became connected by electronic error into the call Butts was making from the office in which Flack was located. According to Burnett's account in the magazine, Bryant came from the practice field to talk with Butts. Burnett said Butts began giving Bryant information about the Georgia team and that he t Burnett i pulled a note pad to the phone and began taking notes. Burnett, according to the Post, waited almost four months until Jan. 4, 1963 to tell the story o( the telephone call. This was to a friend, Bob Edwards, who gave it to Georgia's present coach, Johnny Griffith, the Post said. From there it went to Georgia officials. Jan. 4. 1SW.I Burnett tells his story to Edwards. Jan. 28, 1963 Georgia athletic board accepts Butts' resignation as athletic director, effective at the end of the school year. Pan For Information The Post paid Burnett $5,000 for his information, according to his lawyer, Pierre Howard. Flack, a public relations man, formerly worked for Milton Wer bell, head of an organization known as Communications Inter national. The firm had a branch office here, now closed. Butts, a friend of Werbell's, had access to the office at any time. It was from the dow ntown office the call was made. Werbell said Flack is not now in his employ and that he had the locks changed on the office doors at one point to prevent Flack and "others" from using the office.
