Releases Inquiry's Results
Cook Tuesday released the re
sults of an investigation he said
showed that Butts did indeed di
vulge vital team secrets. Cook
also reported to Georgia Gov. Carl
E. Sanders that Butts w as in con
tact with known gamblers prior to
the game he is charged with rigging-Cook
further disclosed that
Butts had amassed a net fortune
of approximately $206,000 although
his salary was $16,000 a year.
Cook said that all members of
the Georgia coaching staff but one
were questioned as to the value
of the information Butts allegedly
gave Bryant and that six have
given signed statements that such
information "could have affected
Ihe outcome of the game."

attorney, "emphatically denied"
the findings of Cook's investiga
tion and said it was "quite ob
vious" to him the attorney gen
eral was determined to find Butts
guilty.

following release of Cook's report
that there was in the investiga
tion so far "nothing to indicate
the violation of any criminal sta
tute" by Butts.

conducting his own investigation.

"V'ou might be in trouble when
vou get back," Carmichael told
Butts and then related the con
versation Burnett said he over
heard.
"I told Mr. Carmichael I hadn't
said anything wrong," Butts said
This week Bulls said it again
"I'm innocent. I have done no
thing wrong."
Butts. Bryant and Burnett took
ie detector tests in an elfort to
prove their versions were correct
All three passed, according to the
individuals conducting the tests.
Burnett took the lest twice. Bry
ant and Butts, on the advice
of their lawyers, quit after the
first "clearance." Burnett said
he was willing to take a truth
serum. For a while the authentic
ity of lie detector tests which
are not usually allowed into
courtroom was questioned.
One of the lie detector ques
tions asked Burnett:
"Are you trying to frame Wally
Butts and Bear Bryant;
Answer: No.
One of the questions put to Butts
in his test:
"In your 35 years of coaching
football have you ever 'connived
to fix a game?
Answer: No.

"The 'Alabama i defenses were
changed and coach Bryant was
gratelul to coach Butts for call
ing this to his attention," Rose
said in his letter. "Coach Bryant
told me that calling this to his
attention may have favored the
University of Alabama team but
he doubted it seriously."
Calls Are Common
In his capacity as a member
of the Southeastern Conference
rules committee. Butts often tele
phones other coaches. Most of
those calls. Butts once said, were
to clarity rules. The former Geor
gia coach also was a member of
the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) rules com
mittee and occasionally had tele
phone conversations with coaches
outside the conference about rules.
One of these conversations in
1962, lasting for almost an hour,
was with Florida State coach Bill
Peterson, who recalled that only
routine and official matters were
discussed.
The case against Butts, and to
a lesser degree Bryant, seemed
to hinge on whether the informa
tion exchanged in their telephone
conversation was more than just
routine that it actually was so
detailed and specific that a game
outcome could be influenced.

Burnett, the father of seven
children, did not seem to be a
likely candidate for the role he
had. One question raised was
whether he knew enough about
football to know what Butts and
Bryant were talking about.
Burnett, according to the Post,
was trying to make a local tele
phone call in Atlanta to a friend
named Milton Flack. He became
connected by electronic error into
the call Butts was making from
the office in which Flack was
located.
According to Burnett's account
in the magazine, Bryant came
from the practice field to talk
with Butts. Burnett said Butts
began giving Bryant information
about the Georgia team and that
he t Burnett i pulled a note pad
to the phone and began taking
notes.
Burnett, according to the Post,
waited almost four months until
Jan. 4, 1963 to tell the story o(
the telephone call. This was to a
friend, Bob Edwards, who gave
it to Georgia's present coach,
Johnny Griffith, the Post said.
From there it went to Georgia
officials.

The Post paid Burnett $5,000 for
his information, according to his
lawyer, Pierre Howard.
Flack, a public relations man,
formerly worked for Milton Wer
bell, head of an organization
known as Communications Inter
national. The firm had a branch
office here, now closed. Butts, a
friend of Werbell's, had access to
the office at any time. It was
from the dow ntown office the call
was made.
Werbell said Flack is not now
in his employ and that he had
the locks changed on the office
doors at one point to prevent
Flack and "others" from using
the office.
Burnett, in recent years, has
worked his way up to a junior

trouble with his personal finances.
Charges On Record
Criminal court records show he
was iined $100 and put on one
year probation for a series of liie
bad check charges. All the checks
were written on accounts that had
been closed, court records show.
He had been in similar diffi
culty in Texas in 1933.
Burnett's troubles wilh money
first came to light in a meeting
with University System of Geor
gia officials investigating the au
thenticity of his story about Butts.
He told them, according to Die
Post, that "I got into trouble be
cause I've always had trouble
handling my financial affairs and
not because I acted with crim
inal intent."
When Butts' coaching days were
over, he had hoped to retire
pleasantly into business. But busi
ness has gone bad for Butts in
recent years and he missed the
rough and tumble of the athletic
field.
He told an Atlanta group short
ly after he was out as coach:
"My friends tell me the first year
of retirement is the worst. I'm
looking forward to getting this
one over with."
Much has happened since then.
