' Make Skills lferalbabXete$ Work For You Sun.. March 17, 1963 Pge 1J.R They'll Do It Every Time i . Bv Jimmv Hatlo If you are more lhan "just look ing over" the eligible bachelors, you can take a tip from airline stewardesses. A man may be attracted to your winning smile and scrubbed peach complexion, but when he begins to think of a home he is bound to wonder how well you could manage his. Stewardesses, in their hostess school training, are taught. A. B, C, skills that help explain the high marriage rate among these gals. These skills are: good grooming, human relations and the art of being a hostess. It would seen that these things should come to us gals naturally but becoming a well-rounded woman takes as much practice as pre paring for any other professions. If you ask an airline hostess, she will tell how she gains that all-over, well-groomed air. One essential is hair that is becomingly styled and kept fresh, shining and manageable through frequent shampoos. Daily crub-1 bings with plenty of soapsuds keep her skin clear and blemish-free. Added to this is maintenance of a proper diet and exercising to keep her figure trim. And, she never steps out in a soiled or wrinkled uniform. Herl clothing, too, gets extra alien-; lion. The hostess school also includes thorough training in tray-setting, meal service and cabin manage ment. Although you may not have access to such specific schooling, you can start with keeping a neat kitchen and serving your meals with a flair. Every meal need not be a candlelight - and - wine affair, but a clean tablecloth or place mats, and attractive china and silver, crcata a pleasant dining" i aimospnere. N Of equal importance to the run ning of a smooth home or apart ment is your attitude. Steward esses know when to talk and when to be quiet, how to soothe nervous! or grumpy persons, and how to; "smile through" with a pleasant, calm manner even in trying sit uations. This may all sound like work, and it is. but the end result, a pleasant efficiently run home, is worth it. . Occasionally we need to take a loftier perspective on housework. Unless you're a superb housekeep er, the tendency is to pay most careful attention to tne areas from eye level down to the floor. A petite homcmaker 1 know told me she relies on her tall husband to tell her when the top of the refrigerator needs washing. Although I'm not ne to hunt for housework. I suffered a mild shock when I gingerly climbed up on a chair to reach a book on the top shelf of the bookcase My, how the dust piles up! From my near ceiling perch I could clearly see the dust-covered door tops, the del icate corner cobwebs, and the lit tle dust accumulations along the tops of the drapes. It's not a simple case of lazi- I ness mat Keeps me Irom rising to the problem. I just don't like climbing up and down chairs, foot stools or unsteady boxes. To bring the stepladder from the basement is a chore, too. In searching for 9 good, stable step-up, I have tested combina tion chair-stools, and small fold ing stcpladdcrs. If you suffer the same unease I do climbing any thing higher than a curbstone, test a ladder before you buy it. I found chair-steps tha! provided too slender a footing and some that weie sieauy aim mm oui i couldn't tell by looking. One new design in folding step- ladders has a high-arched hand-1 hold back. This one. of anodized 5 aluminum, is light to carry about. An auxiliary plastic pocket which fits the back holds such easily forgotten essentials as an extra dust rag within reach. Homemakers who live in con temporary homes with high and wide windows will appreciate the easy elevation and solid footing of new folding stepladdrrs which put them w ithin easy reach of top-corner cleaning.
