Log Trucks Gain Space Log 'truck haulers were grant ed another foot of payload space as a result of action Thursday by the State Highway Commis sinn. . The commission amended a res olution which previously had for- , hidden log trucks to haul loads higher than 12 feet 6 inches. The new ruling now allows haulers to ' load their logs to a height of 13 feet 6 inches, the same height limitation as on other vehicles. State Highway Engineer For rest Cooper recommended the permit change. He pointed out the lack of accidents in loss of loads and the improvements in hauling equipment and the bet ter methods of securing loads in recent years. The new height will apply to all log trucks, .providing the bunks on which the logs are car ried are equipped with stakes, Except on a few highways where the higher loads are pro hibited becau.se of low structures, all vehicles will now be permitted to haul loads having a maximum height of i3 feet 6 inches, with tlio exception of vehicles trans porting lumber. Oregon law pres ently prohibits lumber trucks from' going beyond a height of 12 feet 6 inches. (UPP - A young mother, apparently worried about taking care of her two-week old baby girl, shot and killed the child and then wounded herself fatally Wednesday, sheriff's offi cm reported. The incident look pace at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Cur tis here. Officers said the mother, Mrs. Linda Curtis, 20, turned a rifle on the child' and then shot licrself. The mother lived about 30 minutes after being admitted to a Hermlston hospital. Deputies said the mother had been ner vous and worried about caring for Ihe chid. The husband is employed by a state highway surveying crew in this area. Morse Warns Of Red Danger WASHINGTON (LTD - Sen Wayne Morse, D-Ore., said Indov that conditions existing In Haiti ana Iru can form Uie back bone of Communist take-over. Such potential is "present In several other" Latin American nations, including I!ra7.il, he told the foreign relations commission of the American Legion, Morse, chairman of tltc Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Latin America, said that since offensive missiles have been re moved from Cuba, "our policy toward Cuba should exclude direct military action for the present." One reason for this, he said. Is that tha Communist threat in Latin America is "home-grown, and it exists no matter what be comes of Fidel Castro and his gov-rnmenL" J.TWS, Klamath Falls, Ore.
