Mon.. Oct. 16, iyi Pg 7-A Calif amis Voters Join Republicans SACRAMENTO (UPIl - Voting officials in five of the state's 13i most heavily populated counties say there has been a small hut noticeable increase in voter switches from Democratic to Re publican, possibly because of a plea by former Gov. Goodwin J. Knight. A United Press International poll of voting officials in the 13 counties revealed this today. Knight, an announced candidate for the GOP nomination for gov-l ernor against former Vice Presi dent Richard M. Nixon, made this appeal in a statewide television appearance last Sept. 27: "To Democrats. 1 say this. . .If you want to vote against Nixon, register just for a day as a Re publican and vote for me in the primary next June. Nixon supporters discounted the significance of the registration switches. They pointed out a re cent public opinion poll 'The Field: . Poll t showed Nixon with 77 peri 'cent of the GOP voters and Knight with 12 per cent. Knight said that "since cross filing has been abolished, many thousands of Democrats who do not favor Gov. Brown or Mr. Nixon are trapped and cannot vote against Brown or Nixon unless they register as Republi cans before April 12. lflfil. 1 think many Democrats and Republi cans will approve this freedom of choice." Ben Hite. Los Angeles County reeistrar of voters, said "there is a definite swing going now. but just how significant it might be is still doubttuL." Hite, whose county has just over! 40 per cent of California's voters, said a two-day spot check on Oct. 6 and Oct. 9 showed that 8.2 per cent of all voter registrations! were switches from Democratic io Republican. On Oct. 6. he said, 577 persons' registered to vote and 41 of these were switches. On Oct. 9, 53 of 5R7 registrants changed. Voting officials in San Ber nardino, Riverside, San Joaquin and Sacramento counties also said they noticed an increase in voter changes from Democratic to Republican. Riverside Registrar C. W Hodges said a spot check of 100 registrations in the first week after Knight's Sept. 27 broadcast! showed "about half" of them were;" changing their affiliation, "but since that time, there's been noij signitieant cnange mat we can see." San Bernardino official Eleanor Felton said that following Knight's plea she received a number of telephone calls from Democrats asking if they could write Knight's name on the Democratic ballot. She said she "told them 'no' of course, because that would amount to cross filing." which has been repealed in California. She said a "quick check" of 1,000' registration affidavits on hand showed that 3 in that group had switched from Democrat to Rc publican. In San Joaquin County, voting! official Cliff Rromme said 12 Democrats and one Republican switched registration m Septem ber. Sacramento County Clerk C. C LaRue said 50 Democrats in. his county switched affiliation in one week. He said the changes have been "a few more than normal. The only thing I can attribute it to is Knight's suggestion. Spokesmen in Orange. Fresno, Kern, San Diego. San Mateo, Contra Costa. Alameda and San Francisco counties said either . that there had been no noticeable change in voter switches or that they had no indication at all Red Pilot Foils Grab MOSCOW i UPIi Three Rus sian Armenians hijacked a smail airplane in an apparent bid tol flee the Soviet Union but the pilot foiled the attempt by crash-land ing, the Communist youth news, paper said today.
