This was the mystery intriguing the capital today. The first lady's press secretary Miss Pamela Tumure, made the titillating disclosure Friday that Mrs. Kennedy came across start ling discoveries during her first two weeks in the executive man tion. Mrs. Turnure said the first lady would make the discoveries pub lic soon. She said she did not know what they were. The attractive press secretary would say only (hat Mrs. Ken nedy "has learned some startling things she wants to share. These things were discovered, Miss Turnure said, during Mrs, Kennedy's tours of the White House with members of the Fine Arts Commission. Capital observers speculated about what the discoveries might be. Had Mrs. Kennedy discovered secret passageways or rooms in (he White House? Were some of the historic treasures missing' Were heretofore unknown val uable paintings and furnish ings found? Keep watching for the startling conclusion of the mystery of the White House discoveries. Hatfield Goes To Conference SALEM (AP) - Gov. Mark 0. Hatfield and three other officials are in Boise, Idaho, for a meeting to discuss methods ' of restoring Columbia River salmon runs. Attending are the governors and fish officials of Washington. Idaho and Oregon. Hatfield Bug tested the meeting be held. Orchardists Protest Bills SALEM (AP) Some JflO per sons mostly orchard owners- showed up Friday in opposition to two bills to remove tne prop erly tax exemptions for fruit trees. At presont, only orchard land is taxable and not the trees, but the bill would change this tn make the trees taxable as well as orchard land. Charles Mack, chairman of the Etate Tax Commission, spoke in support of the bill on the grounds of tax equality. He said also it! was difficult to assess the land! apart from the vegetation on it, especially range land. ." Rep. George Annala, D-Hood River, said the law in bis county resulted in a heavy shift of taxes from orchards to home owners. business owners and even other1 farmers. Paul Culbertscn, Medford pear Blower, said that the pear grow ing industry faced a serious prob lem with pear decline in Jackson County, and this affected the tax paving ability. Culbertson said pear decline bad reduced production in the area by about one-third. He said that local growers had put up sumo $25,000 to bolster a state supported research effort to find , the cause of the pear decline. Nutritionist Warns Dealers CORVALL1S (API An animal nutritionist has told feed dealers they must carefully comply with the letter of the law on feed drugs. Dr. H. S. Wilgus of the Ray Ewing Co. of Pasadena, Calif. told 200 dealers at the 19th Animal Nutrition Conference that the Food and Drug Administration is expected to make closer inspec tions to Insure compliance. He had fainting spells., his vision was faulty, his feet were always cold. His wife. Mary, recalls that she carried his meals to him became walking to the table had become a major project.
