French Town Adopts U.S. Soldier, Appeals To JFK - PONT L'EVEQUE, Francel (APi This little Normandy town has adopted an American GI and has appealed to President Ken nedy to let him stay in France to complete his education. The GI, incidentally, happens to be a mainstay on the local bas ketball team: He is SP4 John H. Givens, 24, of Milwaukee, Wis. Givens, stationed with the Army Aerial Support Center at nearby St. Andre, warmed up to his French surroundings almost from the moment he arrived in Decem ber 1959. It was through his bas ketball skill that he became ac- $647 Collected In Dimes Event LAKEVIEW A total of $47.30 was collected by the 49 mothers who took part in the Mothers' Starch held Tuesday night, Jan. 31, in Lakeview, according- to a report from Mrs. Thclma Hop kins who was in charge of the crew. , The treasury of the local group is badly in need of funds as the expenses during 1960 were high in caring for a few cases. . Givens had played on YMCA and high school basketball teams in Milwaukee and found a spot as a forward on the local Army squad. He soon was hooping bas kets in Pont l'Eveque and in ear ly 1960 got taken on as center or forward. Local families set aside a room for him on game nights and he eats at the family table. His French developed to the point where conversation flows easily. Everything was going well un til Givens announced he was booked to return to the States next June. The local citizenry, un known to Givens, got together and Bernard Chauvierc, presi dent of the Pont l'Eveque Sports Union, drafted a letter to Presi dent and Mrs. Kennedy. "Mr. Givens epitomizes the! friendship of France and the Unit ed States," Chauviere wrote, iind then he added two requests: 1. That Givens be given a grant so he can study at the nearby University of Caen after he com pletes his military service in1 France. 2. That Mrs. Kennedy becomei the sponsor of the Pont l'Eveque basketball team. The letter was sent to the American embassy in Paris and was forwarded to the State De partment for the White House. "This all came as a big sur prise to me," Givens told a re porter. "I don't know what to say." Communists Battling Over Phone WARSAW (AP) A provincial 'Polish town is in turmoil with lo cal Communist aristocracy bat tling over the latest status sym bola white telephone. The Communist party organ Trybuna Ludu gave this account of the battle in the town identi fied only as "B." t The director of communications received a shipment of 40 white telephones to be distributed in his area. But there were far more peo ple who were deeply convinced that their positions and social rank entilted them to the white "luxury" telephone. , The town began to seethe. Tele phone calls began. The director was bombarded not only by the most important citizens but what is worse, by their wives. The pos session of a white telephone be came a matter of honor, ambi tion, prestige and importance. The beleaguered director .final ly set up a special commission to decide on the allocation of the tel ephones and all but one were dis tributed. "The debate over its distribu tion is still going on," the paper said. Many important people, how ever, did not get the badge of importance. Trybuna Ludu said a number of disappointed wives have threat ened their husbands with divorce and some dissatisfied local offi cials have carried the matter to influential friends in ministries in Warsaw. I Ai : .J... e' umciiui la a MlclUOW 01 his former self," the paper said. "He avoids acquaintances. He has lost his appetite. He has nightmares in which he sees-local aristocrats demanding telephones and threatening him with the most dire consequences." He was last seen leaving town 'on an official trip." 2-6 1 HERALD AND NEWS, Klamath Falls', Oregon Monday, February 6. 11 PACE 7 Klamath Forest Has Dry January Although rainfall statistics at the end of December indicated near-normal conditions up to that time, the picture presented at the end of January is not so pleas ing. The best treatment for minor hum is making the in jured part in ire water. Have you ever heard of this? A. Yes. A I.os Angeles physician used this method in the emer gency treatment of 150 patients with minor burns. Results were very good.
