The walls are made of inland red cedar and the plank and beam ceiling of Douglas fir. Western pine region lumber was used for the trim rather than mould ings and this contributes to the comfortable informal feeling. Note particularly the beam stock used to frame the window. Lumber Gives Warmth In Bedroom's Renovation A bedroom should be a warm, inviting room and one of the best ways to inject this feeling is with an abundant use of lumber panel ing. This may be left in a natural shade with a clear finish, colored with one of the increasingly popu lar pigmented finishes, or painted, though this last alternative natural ly hides much of the beauty and charm of wood. If you plan to use a clear or pigmented finish give thought to whether you want a wood with small tight knots, such as found in lodgepole pine or Idaho white pine, or the larger, distinctive knot formations found, say, in pondcrosa pine. If you want no knots you should select a clear grade in the wood of your choice. Many people like their paneling topped with a clear finish and, if you prefer this, you naturally will want to give attention to the color of the wood as well as the knot pattern. Very light woods include Engelmann spruce and Idaho white pine. If you are after the dark reddish tones that so many people like, you might select in cense cedar or inland red cedar. The former is particularly nice if you are planning built-ins for the bedroom, because this species will impart a pleasant fragrance to your closets and drawers if you leave the wood unfinished. Other western pine species suitable for paneling and built-ins are sugar pine, larch, white fir and Douglas fir. Wood can be used in many ways in a bedroom In the form of lum ber paneling it is excellent for the walls and ceiling. Your wall paneling may give total coverage or, particularly in a small room, you might use it as wainscoting with a patterned paper above. A flat, paneled ceiling might match your walls or you might change the mood by putting up a plank and beam ceiling in the same wood or a similar species. Lumber really can do a beautiful job for you when it comes to built ins for (lie bedroom. It is ideal for closets, wardrobes, dressers, cup boards, cabinets, and shelves. If you are handy you can build these yourself or you can have a profes sional do the work. In either case, you will end up with custom p'anned storage which is both handsome and practical since it creates a coordinated atmosphere and makes the most of your space. When you use lumber and lum ber paneling you can do so in any number of styles. Your bedroom may be as formal or informal as you wish. It depends upon the way you design the room and handle your wood. A clear grade of lum ber will tend to give a sleek so phisticated look, while knots help give a rustic or country feeling. The finish you choose will have a major effect on your room, too. A natural wood stain will give a traditional air and a pigmented fin ish a modern touch but, no mat ter how you use your lumber or what finish you pick, the room will have, an inviting homey feel- naause you have used wood. Good Tasi e Exemplified In Modern Wood Panels For generations, householders have chosen wood wall paneling as a backdrop for their rooms' fur nishings. Like sterling silver on the dinner table, wood on the walls is considered by many as the mark of supreme good taste. Today's homeowner prizes wood Wc-lls for a number of reasons. For one, they guarantee perma nence no worrying about future sessions with the paperhanger or piiint bucket. For another, wood finished naturally, as most panel ing is these days, produces a neu tral background which compliments any color scheme or furniture style. Paneling comes In many styles and species. The leading favorite is tongue-and-groove paneling of one of the creamy beige softwoods like west coast hemlock. The tongue-and-groove panel boards fit together with nary a joint show ing, creating a sleek, satiny foil for furnishings. Sometimes paneling is used to create a special effect or to em phasize a certain type of decor. Again, naturally finished wood is usually preferred, especial ly if it's delicately grained hem lock, but in some cases, painted paneling fits the bill. If the room features antique gold in any quan tity, especially in mirrors or in pieces which stand very close to the vails, flat white paint or glazed coici might set them off better than would natural wood tones. And of course, painted wood was much in style during Colonial times. Very contemporary decor, on the other hand, can be accentuated with paneling which literally has been lifted off the abode's exterior. Making quite a splash in the field of decorating is the idea of us ing rough-sawn western red cedar siding. Tongued-andgrooved for snug, jointless fit, the unsurfaccd cedar panel boards introduce a world of delightful texture. Usual ly Ihey arc finished with clear rez or with rez which is lightly tint ed to bring out even more vividly the cedar's rich autumn coloring. Special treatments might be ac corded accent walls. A wall of white pocket Douglas fir, finished cither clear or with metallic paint brushed into its open pores, gives an exotic effect.
