PAGE SIX J he. architect has four major sections to dove-tail together: the sleeping quarters, the formal en tertainment rooms, the working center and the relaxation area, Because of the multitude of shapes each can take, the pos sible variations are endless. But ev ery now and again an architect hits a pattern that seems as perfect as a classic painting. X-93 in the House of the Week series is such a design. Each of the four major sections is fully de veloped. They are not just ade quale, but luxurious. The four ma jor pieces in the design puzzle fall together with perfect harmony. Nothing was forced into place. Ev ery room in the plan complements its neighbors. The designer is Architect Ru dulph Matcrn, who does not be lieve a house is merely a shelter. "Every modern home should be gracious, comfortable and effil- cient," he says. "A little season ing with luxury can make it a work of art." That was the lofty goal in the planning of X-93. The house has eight rooms un der a long, low-slung ranch roof. X-93 STATISTICS This design offers a total of eight habitable rooms, with three or four bedrooms at the owner's option. There are 2.239 square feet of living area. Over all dimensions are 81' U" width by 45' 9" depth. Closet total is 2-1, with 22 lineal feet of kitchen base cabi nets and 23 feet of hanging cabinets. Additional storage is available in the full basement. LUXURY IN A LOW KEY: An unusually harmonious com bination of the four major areas of a home (sleeping, en tertaining, working and relaxation) make this long ranch design outstanding There are three or four bedrooms, at owner's option. The living room is sunken one step and separated from the din ing room by this step and a floor to-ceiling metal grille. Kitchen and family room lie directly behind these formal rooms. If only three bedrooms are required, there's a 2'i-room master suite. Four bed rooms are available if this is cut to There are three baths, mud room and a hobby or shop room. Exterior is a combination of tone, brick and vertical siding. Habituble area is 2,239 square feet. The house is wide, running almost 32 feet from side to side. Additional Details The formal living room is set squarely in the front of the house for easy access from the main entrance, glamorized by a covered exterior porch, double front doors and a large inside foyer. The liv pg room offers 300 square feet of elegance, bounded on one side py a 14-foot bow window and on the other by a beautiful fireplace. The dining room is three feet narrower than the living room, in creasing its identification without impairing usefulness. A section of pierced roof insures an abundance of natural light from the set-back dining room windows. - Spacious Master's Suite The bedroom wing is well in sulated from noisier sections. A spectacular feature is the luxury of the master's suite. Even if the folding wall is re placed with a permanent one to create a fourth bedroom, the mas ter's suite retains the porch, dress ing room and private bath. The front bedroom is second largest, and has provision for a vanitory shielded behind a folding dnor. The main bath is long and i oomy, with both a tub and a show er stall. Kitchen and family room main lain X-93's high standards. Wood panelling, exposed wooden roof beams and a light trough give work and relaxation a warm, rus tic setting. There's a second fire place in the family room, which has easy access to the covered family porch. Unusual Kitchen The kitchen is out of the ordin ary, with a main unit of four coun lertop burners and an adjoining built-in wall oven plus a second auxilary pair of countcrtop burn ers handy to the dinette table. Basement stairs are just outside the kitchen foyer and beyond this is an ample laundry, mud room and utility area with the plan's third bath and a separate hobby room, shop or darkroom. A special design note is the in teresting front wall of the two car garage. It's made of brick with foot-square glass blocks re cessed for a shadow box effect.
