AUGUST 10. 1958 VITM FOOT- All Things Nice And Fashion Spice That's What Girls' Shoes Are Made Of "Sugar 'n' Spice" is the gen eral rule for little girls' shoes this season. The pump, for instance, is now much like mother's fashionable "little heel" pumps frequently with the long, tapered toe of 1957, but built on a last particularly suited to young feet. It also features high throat lines, and trims on the toe or vamp of tiny weskits or horizon tai tucks. Some black smooth leather pumps have spat-like trim of taupe or beige suede leather. Some of the newest are smaller editions of the spectator, pump in taupe, beige or hlack with white More American Collegiares In the United States, about 25 ficr cent of the college-age group s attending a university or col lege as compared to five per cent of the same age European group. In other words, at least five times as many attend college here as in Europe, and seven times as many of the age group attend high school in America. trim and white leather linings. For really gala occasions, a lit tle girl demands slippers of gold or silver leather or a luster leath er or a jcweledtono suede pump! Swivel straps that turn a shoe from a Mary Jane into a pump are a feature that pleases both little girls and their mothers. Heels on these "vcry-dressed-up" shoes are curvy, just like mother's. They may be encrust ed with glittering rhinestoncs and peans, or these jewels may ap pear in a sparkling design on the shoe's toe. If he's homesick, be sympa thetic but firm. Pon't pity him or offer him special rewards when be comes home. There will be more suede than last year, both alone and in mm. bination with patent, reptile and smooth leathers. Matte calf will be seen on a patent leather heel. Add to the traditional suede for evening wear at least one golden leather slipper and one slipper of bright-colored, high-ty-lustered leather in jewel tones. college man's shoe wardrobe: The wing-tip will be as neces sary for the collegian as for the businessman. It now has finer perforations, comes in smooth leather with a highly polished or matte finish most popular are -mm v blacks, brown and burgundy, The plain-toe blucher in cordo van or lightly-grained leather will be the collegiaq's staple shoe! Every man will also want brushed-Ieather shoes with a moc casin toe for casual wear. It will probably have only one or two eyelets and may come in a loden green or brassj shade as well as tan or brown. Another moc-loe will combine smooth leather with a grained' leainer vamp. Slip-ons. too. will be required. These will be the most continen tal looking with lone erevhound lines emphasized by a high tongue. They may have side interest in elastic gores or decorative leath er pleating. One of them, good for wear with both shorts and dinner jackets, will be of brushed leather piped with smooth leather and cut on the lines of the pump for for mal dance. As for this formal pump this year it may be of fine-textured smooth leather as well as of patent leainer. Most of the college man's shoes will have a medium-low topline and a moderately pointed toe and will be set on lower heels than last term's. Also included in the picture is a long, lean silhouette that bor rows from the Continent but shows a strong American influence. Smooth, all-leather linings and close-trimmed leather soles are a part of this look as is the leather welt which not only gives the shoe a well-finished appearance but assures that it will keep its shape to the last day of wear. Small Boys' Shoes Look Real 'Grown Up' It's getting harder than ever to "keep up with the boys." And that pace they travel begins with the sleek sports-car design of the mm THE TURNABOUT CARDI GAN Geography may pre sent a problem, but not this turn-about dressmaker Tycora yarn sweater. It may be worn as a cardigan, or reversed to a cowl-collared slip-on. FASHION TAKES A 'BOW Bows "bow into" the fashion picture from every direction. Al most no coat, dress, blouse or playset is without at least one. Bows are in every size . . . front and back . . . alone or with many, . many more. leather shoes they wear. The new long, low and sleek look is due first to new light weight and more supple leather uppers on trim, flexible leather soles: secondly, to improved con struction which includes such things as softer and more flexible toe boxes and counters and leath er lining and welts. From kindergartener on the small lad may wear an oxford that's as conservative as his col lege brother's a five-or six eyelet with rounded sharkskin too or a low-cut one-or two-eyelet with a tapered toe. The most fre quently seen oxford will strike a compromise with three eyelet! and a moderately tapered toe. The oxford will often leature combinations of leather appearing as trim or may be entirely of tex tured leather in a lightly etched, pebbly grain. Boys will look up-to-the-minute in shoes of black smooth leather with gray suede trim cr moc toe styles in the new two-way brushed leather. Neat slip-ons round-toed or moderately-tapered are also fa vorites. Boys like their traditional grown-up details including the wide sabot strap, the bridle strap fastened at either side by brass or leather rings and monk straps. Crossed straps: military buckles; fringed ties and tassels from tha Tyrol all add a "big fella" look. Easy-going loafers step out in soft leathers suede, buffed, punched pig, are all the new "smoothies." BUTTON'S, BUTTONS Pearl buttons are most impor tant this season.
