Meeting American Legion Solon Has Change Of Tax Heart PORTLAND (AP) A year aco state Sen. Walter J. Pearson iD Portland) proposed a sales tax lor education. He no longer believes in mat. Pearson, chairman of the lenk. lative interim committee studying me state s lax structure, said Sat urday ne ininKs now t hat if a sales tax were adopted as a form of property relief, all of the money should be returned to the counties to give direct reduction in property taxes. His original proposal, made last year at a committee meeting Eugene, would give schools too much money, he said in explain ing his changed position. He said "school people had to think up new ways to spend money", in consid ering what they would do with tales tax receipts. He said he agrees that some thing must be done to get more money for schools as costs of edu cation mount. But the best way may be direct county property tax relief, he said. He added that if this were done through turning sales tax money back to counties, it would be necessary to impose a limitation on either millage or assessments "so that property taxes . . . would not bounce back up again."
