Solon Has
Change Of
Tax Heart
PORTLAND (AP) A year aco
state Sen. Walter J. Pearson iD
Portland) proposed a sales tax lor
education. He no longer believes
in mat.
Pearson, chairman of the lenk.
lative interim committee studying
me state s lax structure, said Sat
urday ne ininKs now t hat if a
sales tax were adopted as a form
of property relief, all of the
money should be returned to the
counties to give direct reduction
in property taxes.
His original proposal, made last
year at a committee meeting
Eugene, would give schools too
much money, he said in explain
ing his changed position. He said
"school people had to think up new
ways to spend money", in consid
ering what they would do with
tales tax receipts.
He said he agrees that some
thing must be done to get more
money for schools as costs of edu
cation mount. But the best way
may be direct county property tax
relief, he said.
He added that if this were done
through turning sales tax money
back to counties, it would be
necessary to impose a limitation
on either millage or assessments
"so that property taxes . . . would
not bounce back up again."

Freight Tax
Called Off
WASHINGTON (AP) Presi
dent Eisenhower's signature Mon
day repealed the half billion dol
lar a year federal tax on freight
shipments.
It 'was the lone tax cut in a hill
continuing for another year the
Korean War increases in corpora
tion income taxes and in. excises
on new autos, car accessories
liquor and cigarettes.
The bill was passed by Congress
just last Friday to beat a July 1
deadline for what was otherwise
an automatic drop in the rate in
creases. It thereby averted a $2,
115.000.000 revenue loss to the gov
ernment.
This probably will be the only
tax cut to come from Congress this
session.
