Now 80, Nan Aspinwall Gable will be the subject of a "Death Valley Days" television film based on her exploit of riding a horse all alone from San Francis co to New York in 1910. It was Col. William Cody. Buf falo Bill himself, who thought up the idea of the cross-country ride. "But then he back-tracked," Nan recalls. "He got scared, and Group Hears AF Officer Maj. Richard T. Mallon, base executive officer at Kingsley Field, was the guest speaker at a lunch eon meeting of the Life Insurance Underwriters Association of Klam ath Falls on Friday. Speaking before more than 20 associate members on the "Im pact Kingsley Field will have on Klamath Falls," he stated that af ter Kingsley Field becomes fully operational, "the estimated month ly military payroll of the airmen at Kingsley Field will be $500,000 a month, or six million dollars per year. This amount does not Include the money that the Air Force will spend for goods and services in the construction and maintenance of the base. When you divide the 30,000 population of Klamath Falls into six million dollars you arrive at a potential added income of almost $204 a year for each in habitant, he stated. At the conclusion of his speech. Major Mallon briefly outlined the highlights of the Cordiner Com mittee Report. This is a report prepared by Ralph" J. Cordiner, president of General Electric Cor poration, which was recently sub mitted to Congress calling for the revision of the pay structure of the Armed Forces to eliminate the loss of thousands of highly trained technicians who leave the services each year for higher paying civil ian gobs. Her cross-country trip, alone and unprotected, took 180 days riding time. Both Cody and her husband urged her to use a tough mustang for the trip but she in sisted on a thoroughbred mare. I wanted her because sne could step across the ties on rail road trestles. And I didn t want any mustang trampling all overj me while I was sleeping on the desert."
