and twos and busloads to the un
posing marble memorial to Lin
coln. They leave, most of them,
solemn and subdued.
Tomorrow, on the H9!h anniver
sary of the birth of a martyred
man, special ceremonies will take
place at the glistening white me
morial beside the Potomac. A
presidential wreath will be placed
there in honor of the Civil War
President.
But day after day, ordinary
people by the thousands coine to
pay their own tributes to Abra
ham Lincoln. As at no other
shrine in the nation's capital, they
seem to capture and carry away

time, from over the country and
all over the world. Many come
again and again.
A middle-aged Washingtonian
said: "I don't .know- how many
times I've been here. It gives me
a teeling of comfort and peaceful
ness and confidence. Particularly
at night, when those soft lights
make him seem so real and close

seated figure of Lincoln, then im
pulsively uncover their heads.
They turn to the south wall and
scan the immortal Gettysburg Ad
dress. They read on the north wall
Lincoln's second inaugural ad
dress, with closing words so ap
plicable to the present: ". . . Let
us strive on ... to do all which
may achieve and cherish a just
and lasting peace among our
selves and with all nations."
The gray-haired Minnesota farm
wife remarked softly: "He based
his philosophy so much on studies
of the Bible." Her husband was
jotting down his impressions in a
notebook: "The most impressive
thing I've seen in Washington."
I believe he was the greatest
man this country ever produced,"
he said, "because he was hum
ble." Trooping In-a moment-later, in
orderly pairs, black and white,
came a class of first-graders from
one of Washington's racially
mixed schools.

on her first visit to Washington.

his mother to bring him to the
memorial, ever since they came
here two weeks ago.
Softly she read him the inscrip
tion above the statue: "In this
temple as in the hearts of the
people for whom he saved the
Union, the memory of Abraham
Lincoln is enshrined forever."

Two Gun Nan, Famed Trick
HOLLYWOOD w - Two Gun
Nan, famed trick shot who fol
lowed Annie Oakley as the star
of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show,
has come to town to help film a
headline-making episode of her
life.
Now 80, Nan Aspinwall Gable
will be the subject of a "Death
Valley Days" television film
based on her exploit of riding a
horse all alone from San Francis
co to New York in 1910.
It was Col. William Cody. Buf
falo Bill himself, who thought up
the idea of the cross-country ride.
"But then he back-tracked,"

highlights of the Cordiner Com
mittee Report. This is a report
prepared by Ralph" J. Cordiner,
president of General Electric Cor
poration, which was recently sub
mitted to Congress calling for the
revision of the pay structure of
the Armed Forces to eliminate the
loss of thousands of highly trained
technicians who leave the services
each year for higher paying civil
ian gobs.
Cordiner believes that passage
of these recommendations will
eliminate this loss, and also pro
vide increased air power at less
cost to the American people.

the troupe at $35 a week each for
the Wild West and the Oriental
parts of the show," she remin
isced. Her cross-country trip, alone
and unprotected, took 180 days
riding time. Both Cody and her
husband urged her to use a tough
mustang for the trip but she in
sisted on a thoroughbred mare.

could step across the ties on rail
road trestles. And I didn t want
any mustang trampling all overj
me while I was sleeping on the
desert." '

Shot, Recalls
Nan, born in New York, grew
up on a Montana Indian reserva
tion, where she learned to shoot
and rope. Gable was already the
star of the Buffalo Bill show when
she married him in 1905. He was
a trick rider and roper. She re
tired when he died in 1929 and
she now lives in San Bernardino,
Calif.

only we used chalk instead of

Her recollection of Buffalo Bill:
"He was either cussing out some
poor Indian or else making love
to some young girl. He was real
