RALPH DALZELL Hinged and swinging bedroom doors in small rooms pose a prob lem for housewives. So much space is used by the swing of the door that furniture arrangement is difficult. Where solid or paneled doors are involved, here is a simple solution. Only three hinges Buy three four-inch butt hinges. and install them as indicated at 6, 7 and 8 in picture C .and as sliown in picture D on the closed side of the door. Hold the two halves of the door tightly together as the hinge positions are planned. Saw along the line 4-5, taking care to keep the saw blade at 90 degrees to the door surface. Then sand paper tire sawed surfaces to re move marks. Screw the hinges to both halves of the door. In most instances it is not necessary to "gain out" (cut tlie wood) so the hinge sur faces can be flush with the sur faces of the door. Then rehang the door on its original hinges. To be safe, it would be wise to apply a liberal coat of alumi num ppint over woodwork, then apply the light color over the alu minum paint. This would avoid any possibility of dark stain bleed ing through the new paint. Orecon's 4-H Club membership climbed to an all-time high this year with greatest gains in Mar-j ion and Lane counties. Burton Hutton, state 4-H Club extension leader aL Oregon State College, reports that 29,013 boys and girls are enrolled in 4-H Clubs, an increase of 2,000 youngsters. About twice as many girls were enrolled as boys. The total is 19, 244 girls and 10,309 boys. Project work also took a sharp upturn, according to the slate club leader. In the ISM club year, the project enrollment was 38.000. This year, youngsters enrolled in 41,000 projects. Each 4-H member car ries at least one project with a variety of subjects to choose from including livestock, clothing, foods, home improvement, health, forest ry, electricity, entomology, crafts, gardening and crops. Foods and clothing projects are most popular home economics proj ects, Hutton said. A 12 per cent increase was noted in foods, with almost 900 members enrolled, and 10,000 youngsters had clothing projects. Revised literature, more intensive leader training and the contri butions of older 4-H members as junior club leaders, have helped boost the 4-H program, Hutton be lieves. There are more than 4,500 volunteer adult 4-H Club leaders in the state. More emphasis will be given this year to the use of community 4-H leaders who helo local leaders in 4-H Clubs. Community leaders do not necessarily lead clubs them selves. Hutton points out, but help now leaders with organization and other features of the program The community leader system has worked well in various areas of the state for the past few years and is encouraged on a state-wide basis the first time this year. Hutton noted the trend in the number of older 4-H Club mem bers who arc staying in club work The college age group members are contributing greatly to the growth of the program, he said.
