Statistics show that most dwelling fires start in the kitchen or living rooms of homes. Bedrooms and basements are often trouble spots as well. The early morning hours from 6 to 9 a.m. seem to be the time when most home fires start. The National Fire Protection Association suggests that each family prepare for a fire emergency by practicing escape drills. Most women would arce with this longing, and a surprisingly large number have some mighty exciting ideas for designing a home that is different. Walls offer the widest range of possibilities for variety in design and for c h a r mi n g originality. Wails dominate the enclosed area of a home, forming the permanent background for your entire decor. Some of the most strikingly original home designs revolve around the indoor -outdoor theme. Its bland, neutral tones will compliment soft pastel shades, as well as the brightest color in fabric, draper ies or rugs. The beauty of this indoor-outdoor wall is only one of its many assets. Another reason for its pop ularity is its easy maintenance, for a feather duster will keep the battens free of dust and they need to be gone over only every few months. Vertical boards and battens will work just as well for an in terior wall, and some of the most friendly living rooms have one or more walls in the drop siding pat tern of the home's exterior. In this way you can tie the two living areas together. It is much easier to develop an air of informality in rooms where! siding or boards-and-battens are I used for the walls because the tex- ture of the wood, the shadow lines and the pattern of the sid-' ing gives a healthy outdoor feel-1 ing.
