Masquerade Party The Thim ble Club of the Neighbors of Wood craft will meet Wednesday, in the Knights of Columbus hall for a masquerade party. Book Club Edith Cunning Book Club of the Business and Professional Women's Club will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Isabelle Brixner, Lake- shore Drive. Alice Gallup, will re view John Gunther's "Inside Af rica." Church Meet Women of Hope Lutheran Church will meet Tues day at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Robert Norris, Route 1, Box 692. Amateur Photographer are invited to attend the regular meet ing of the Klamath Camera Club in the county library building at 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 23 to keip piaa a worthwhile program. Members are to bring pictures taken during the "shooting bee" last month and a few others. There will . be an important business meeting. Initiated ' V Eunice Welman. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Novell A. Welman of 2140 Home Avenue, lophomore majoring in teacher education at Southern Oregon Col lege, was one of seven initiated by the Sigma Epsilon Pi, wom en's scholastic honorary, in a traditional candlelight ceremony last Monday evening. Chief Radarman Bernard L. Laux, U.S. Navy, is scheduled to complete a four-week course Oc tober 26 in the duties of a radar walch officer at the Fleet Air Defense Training Center, San Di ego. The son of Mrs. Ellen L. Berry of Klamath Falls, Laux was . graduated from Franklin High School in Los Angeles be fore entering the service in 1943. James R. Merrill U.S. Army, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Merrill, 1949 Melrose, recently completed ' the armored crewman course at the Seventh Army Tank Training Center in Germany. A 1954 grad M, ate of KUHS, Merrill was em ployed by the Southern Pacific Railroad before entering the Army (Continued from Page One) commissioner's request, but. in June 1956, at a meeting ot the com mission, the Humboldt commis sioners, and the Winnemucca road association in Carson City, Neva da, reconsidered their stand and approved the designation of the 15 mile section as a federal aid secondary highway. The requests of the Humboldt commissioners and the Nevada highway commission were then forwarded to the Bureau of Pub lic Roads in Washington, D.C. for their consideration. The requests were not received in Washington in time for the September meeting of the bureau; but action by the bu reau of the project is expected Death Takes Jack H. Dyer Jack H. Dyer. 59. onetime city plumbing inspector here and resi dent of Klamath Falls since, 1937, died early today at Klamath Val ley Hospital. He had been ill only a brief time. Mr. Dyer was born September 30, 1887 at Fort Smith, Arkansas and followed the plumbing trade most of his life. He was employed by the Card Plumbing Company, Klamath Falls and was a member of the Plumber's Union, local No. 191. ; Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Rae Dyer, Klamath Falls and nieces in Arkansas. Funeral arrangements will be an nounced by O'Hair's Memorial Chapel. Wireman Class Posts Accepted Final enrollment in the inside wireman class for apprentices will be accepted tonight at 7:30 in room 204 of Klamath Union High School, The classes will be conducted for a 10-week period. I Instruction is being offered by Richard L. Hessig of the faculty oi uregon Technical Institute. in January. 1955. He arrived over seas in July of the same year and is a tank driver in Headquar ters Company of the 14th Arm ored Cavalry Regiment's 2nd Bat talion. Graduated Dickie R. Abra- nam, u.b. Army, recently was graduated from the Army's eight week "Skysweeper" (75 millimeter antiaircraft gun) Maintenance School at Fort Bliss, Texas. Son of Mrs. Arulia Green, 339 Broad Street, Abraham attended KUHS before entering the service. His wife, Betty, lives at 319 South Eldorado. within th next few months. If approval of the plan la forth coming this year, 'and funds are available from the bureau and the state of Nevada, then construction is probable by next summer on the 15 mile section, stated Landrum. Nevada 8A is now a modern paved highway to Denio on the Oregon border from its junction with U.S. 95 31 miles north ot Winnemucca. At a point about three miles south of Demo BA branches west towards Cedarville, Ten miles of this portion of IA is also paved. The 15 mile section now under consideration by the Bureau of Roads would be added to this 10 mile section cutting down the un- paved portion of 8A to about 71 miles. COMPLETION The Winnemucca To The - Sea Association has been urging com pletion of Nevada 8A as an all weather through highway td im prove service to a huge triangle in Oregon, California and Nevada which lies roughly between U.S. 95 and 40 in Nevada and 395 In, Cali fornia and Oregon.- This triangle, in area, points out Landrum, contains almost as much land as the entire state of- Indiana and does not now have an adequate east-west paved highway. The route would provide east-west link age for several north-south high ways now in existence- such as U.S. 395 and 95 and would mean a much faster, shorter east-west highway. . h ' The association, Landrum has stated, is primarily concerned at this time with the comploUoji of this 88 mile unpav association feels that routes from Alturas would all be benefited by th new link. ,. INDIAN TROUBLE - - In the 1850s and 1860s the route that Nevada 8A now follUs was roughly the path-of the Applegate. Cutoff from the Oregon Trail. In dian trouble with various tribes led to its abandonment as the main route into this part of th west. At one time the U.S. Army maintained six forts in this general area In an attempt to passify the Indians. ' The route is comparatively level with the highest pass being Cedar Pass between Alturas and Cedar ville. This pass is a modern paved highway open the year around. It was completely modernized sever al years ago by - th -California highway department. Several lesser passes between Cedarville and. the end of the pavement on 1A near Denio should not present any great difficulties in the future to the road builders, Landrum said; Approximately 45 miles of the: unpaved section 8A lies in a long n of Washoe coumy tneno. county seat) which stretches up to the Oregon border' and lies be tween Humboldt County and the California line. To date, Washoe County officials have not publically announced their intentions on this portion of 8A. The section of the Lake of the Woods highway beyond the lake in Klamath County needed to con nect with a paved road in Jackson County, . which has been under study for some time, would be an important link in this all-weather rout from east to west to the Pa cific Ocean, it has been pointed out.
