Condon and again . asserted Vice President Nixon intervened In the case. The organization of scientists acknowledged a denial Wedifrs day by Secretary of the Navy Thomas that Intervention by Nixon was responsible for the Navy re using clearance to Condon, for mer chief of the U.S. Bureau of i Standards. "We are glad to have Mr. Thom- as' comment, because we feel that I ihe record must be set straight," i the ASC said in a statement. F However, the- - organization re- i (erred to an Oct. 33 story In The i Xew York Times which it said quoted Nixon as saying, "Before : left Washington I asked that the Dr. Condon matter be re-examined." Condon was cleared by the East ern Industrial Review Board. Thomas told the ASC Wednesday the case was called to his atten tion by his staff and that he "withdrew clearance. . . The reasonable certainty that, despite Russia's effots. both France and Germany will ratify the pending agreements under which West Germany would be rrined and made a member of the North Atlantic Trtaty Organ- t'-ation. At any rate, there is high op timism that Western defense plans will not suffer another similar de feat in France. If this optimism proves Justified, some American officials believe the main cause paign will have ceased to exist. Meanwhile, of course, the Krem lin may think up somo other rea son to carry on, but developments m the last two days suggest this is not necessarily so. Yesterday, for example, Russia formally warned France that rati fication of the German treaties will annul a French-Russian mutual assistance treaty signed in 1944.
