I aja. . 11 roraronen Await New Price Props Members of the potato Industry were sitting tight this past week waiting (or more information on the governments' assistance pro gram lor potato growers, the USDA announced today. Much speculation has taken place on the overall effect this program, will have renaming prices on 1953 crop potatoes held In storage at the present time. Many persons In the trade as well aa In government circles feel that prices will be stimulated, and that growers will benefit greatly, how much benefit wiU be obtained by growers depends a lot on how many potatoes are purchased and at what price. One part of the program calls for limited purchases at the going market price. Hie term "limited purchases", applies to purchases for eligible Institutions and welfare distribution programs. No - pur chases will be made for dumping potatoes. This means that growers and shippers cannot sit back and expect the government to do their marketing for them. The bulk of future sales will have to be made by indiTiduals. Toe other part of the proposed program calls for diversion pay fueau. Following the announcement of government purchases several of the nation's potato markets showed signs of strengthening.
