INEA Ameri ca's tank program since the Ko rean War started comes closer to meeting original goals than any other major part of the big arma ment buildup. Revelation by the Army here that mass production Is now under way in the Chrysler Delaware plant on the brand new medium Paiton T-48 climaxes this program. The new Patton's revolutionary features are also expected to put U.S. ground forces In front of other nations In guality tanks for the first time. In a few months a total or five major tank plants will be In op eration In the country. And the most significant aspect of the whole program is that these new plants will be capable of increasing out put many times in case of the need for total mobilliation. Crea tion of such reserve facilities Is the essence of the present over-all buildup of the services. Cooperation of the big automo bile firms with Army Ordnance engineers has been a big factor in making all of this possible. Chrysler started from scratch af ter the Korean outbreak to aid the Army in the development of the new medium T-48 And details of a new heavy, the T-43. will soon be revealed. I Harold Allen Hayes, a 30-year-old convict, suf focated In a 15-inch prison sewer pipe Monday In a daring but futile escape attempt. Another convict, Franklin Cling enteel, 17, also was Involved in the attempt. his calls that he was stuck in the narrow pipe, five feet under ground, brought guards to the priv on yarn mannoie wnicn tne two convicts had hoped was the way to freedom.. They had planned to worm their way through the pipe to another manhole outside the prison- walls, a fourth of a mile away. ' They entered the pipe about noon. Several hours later guards were called to the manhole by Clingenteel s shouts. Later he freed himself and came up through another manhole in the prison yard. He told guards that Hayes had gone on ahead. They dug down and smashed pipe sections until they found Hayes' body 375 leet from the manhole. Both men were In prison on burg lary convictions. Clingenteel bad served 17 months of a two-year sentence and Hayes, four months of a three-year sentence. Standard Oil Buys Land SAN FRANCISCO I Standard Oil Company of California Monday announced the purchase of about 3.000 acres of land in Snohomish County, Washington, as a possible site for future construction of an oil refinery. The purchase price was an nounced as approximately $900,000. The site Is southwest of Paine Field. 30 miles north of Seattle. "Our company hasn't any plans of any kind now for the use of this tract," President T. S. Peter sen said.
