PACE FOUR HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON SATURDAY. JULY 9, 1949 riUUIH JBNSJJtS gdltor H A LAXtl.M EPI.gv Manasins editor gnioro M Bocae mi otatla. Ut pnet orltee of Klamath raws. Of., mm August so isus. umxr cl 4 Marc iril Fall tor mlUtnt and helped eoncentral lumber manufacturing In th big center. It had grown from few thousand In 130 to a metropolitan- are population of mora, than 30.000 In 14. and the ratlroada had had a lot to do with that. People way bark In tha other century had known that aoma day tha ralla would to through Klamath and It would change tha destiny of the town They were right. Today's Roundup Th D By MALCOLM EfLEY EPLEY IP thara ara any fhoata of Klamath old-unit railroad dreamer around tomorrow when the first Shasta Daylight streamliner rolli through, they wont be aa surprised aa you may sup poae. They might wonder why It baa taken M long, but tha preaenoa of the latest thing In railroading In tha Klamath sta tion wont be astonishing to them: they knew It all along. It wasn't long after Uncle George Nurse had founded the UlUe town of LmkvlUe on tha banka of Link river that promotion-minded eltlaena began to talk and dream about a railroad for Klamath Falle. By the tune the town was re-named Klamath Fails In 1M at least on survey had been made. That on would hart brought a railroad In by th Butt creek country, and nothing rame of lt But by th turn of the century, railroad talk wa Just about th biggest thing In Klamath. A few years later, th county got lu first rail road. It wa tha Klamath Lake Railroad company a tine, coming Into the county from the southwest and extending aa far aa Pokegama, In the Klamath river country U mile southwest of Klamath. It was primarily a logging railroad, but Klamath Falls by that tiro waa getting to be quit a town and supplying lu needs tor freight and passenger trans portation had become a major problem. Stages and wagon freighter plied bark and forth between th town and Pokegama and us was also mad of naTtgatlon on Klamath river from Keno In this transportation set-up. There waa big talk that th Klamath Lake rail road would b extended to Klamath Palls, as th nam Implied. But It never was. Railroaders recognised th logic of a railroad extension to Klamath from th ML Shasta area, connecting there with the Southern Pacific (th old Oregon and California line.) Even In those years lar-slghted men foresaw that the main line of th north -south railroad would eventually com this way. Th extension was started by another outfit, but it waa taken over by the Southern Pacific and pushed through to completion a far aa Klamath Fails In th spring of 1M. Th first train rolled Into town on May It, 1, amid the wild cheers of th populace, many ot whom had gone down to Ady to rid th train Into town. Par th next 1( years Klamath, though on the railroad, had no rail connections to the north. A rail passenger from this town, going to Salem or Portland, first went Into California and returned to Oregon on the old 8 J, main line. The Idea that the railroad to Klamath would ultimately be ex tended over the Cascades to Eugene was still alive, but It waa dormant for a number of years. Then, In th early twenties, things began to happen. Th Southern Pacific began In earnest th completion of th Natron cut-off. This big con atructlon project brought the main line trains Into Klamath Palls In IRC and the boom waa on. By that time th northern lines, which were always Interested, had some idea about extension Into th Klamath country. Plv years later, the Great North ern had extended a line from Bend to Chemult, from where ft made joint use of the BP. line Into Klamath Palls. Prom Klamath. It had built south to Bleber, Calif, to Join th Western Pacific and put Klamath on two transcontinental railroads. Though then was talk that the OJf. would Institute passenger servtc. and It built a passenger depot on South Sixth In Klamath Palis, the depression knocked that plan In the head and It has never, been revived. That la the main line story. Worthy of separata treatment la the story of the Strahorn "feeder line which, aa the Oregon. California and Eastern, built east from Klamath Palls to Bly In the twenties and Is still In operation. The Southern Pacific meanwhile opened another connection southward to Alturaa and Spark fttenol and the Weyerhaeuser Timber company built a first class logging line Into the mountains west of Klamath Palla. Klamath thus had become the hub In a steel wheel. It had main lines that made It a major aervlclng point and gave It an outlet for lu huge production of lumber and agricultural product. It had feeder line that brought logs Into Klamath By CiKORGK E. SOKOLSKY "UT of the various espionage trials and hearing Vy has developed a curious and most disturbing attack on th FBI It did not start with the trial of Judith Coplon. which only added fuel to a bias ing propaganda. It goea back to lUi when th FBI began to search out the spies planted her by for eign countries, the corrupt among our own people who. for pay, served foreign masters, or who for Idealistic ends, sought to destroy the liberties of our people. In our country. It Is difficult to do such work, as la the duty of the FBI, for. while w desire safety, w eschew the police sute. Public opinion would never tolerate such a police organisation as th NK.VD of Soviet Russia. We demand of the FBI that It produce all th results of police pro tection without using coercive means and without Interference with those guarantees of rlghu provid ed by th constitution. Th American formula Is correct and the FBI has not transgressed It. Were this country faced by a conflict of Ideas alone, the FBI would have no function to perform Difference of opinion, of Judgment, of decision Is characteristic of our way of life. In fact, the consti tution Is devoted to defense and protection ot these differences. Huge Conspiracy WE are. however, faced by something altogether outside the realm ot Ideas. We have become the stomping ground of a vast International con spiracy for the world revolution and into our country has come an army of disciplined agenu of that con spiracy who aeek to achieve not the overthrow of our government but lu seliure and subordination to the Kremlin. Were It only a conflict between the Ideas ot Thomas Jefferson and the Ideas of Karl Marx, between the economics of Frledrich Engels and the economics of Adam Smith, we could rest while the professors tight It out. as they have done for a century. It I more than that. It la resistance to conquest. I have recently been reading the biography of Angelica Balabanoff. the first secretary of the third International, Lenin's weapon for world revolution and conquest. In her "My Life As a Rebel. Angelica Balabanoff describe how Lenin tricked her Into accepting th secretaryship ot th third International In order to use her repuutton among left-wing socialists, which at th moment was better than his. He said to her these are her words: 'Party discipline exists tor you too. dear com rade. The central committee has decided.' (When Lenin had decided something before the central committee had ratified his decision, he usually antici pated their action In this fashion so aa to avoid superfluous discussion. -I knew It would be useless to argu Then ah wrote: Most Disturbed 1 1 was most disturbed at this time and during the coming year to find how many of our agenu and represenutlve were Individuals lone dis credited In the labour movement abroad. They were chosen because they had nothing In common with the labour movement and could, therefore, obey th most contradictory and outrageous orders quit mechanically and with no sens of responsibility. Adventurers, opportunist, even former red-baiters, all were grist to Zlnovlevs mill. They departed on secret missions, supplied with enormous sums ..." These methods hav not changed. What a dis illusioned person that fine woman. Angelica Balaban off. ha become, watching the conspiracy for power known as Leninism? And it Is this conspiracy that th FBI haa to watch and not in this country. There are about 70.000 communist party members In the United States and ten time as many friends and sym pathizers and Innumerable Innocent, who. for on reason or another, do phase of th party' work. Piecing these activities together is the Job of the FBI. And "piecing together" I the correct phrase to use. These people do not blase a trail. A little Inkling appears her and there and It may take months and years to discover a pattern of activity or the affiliation of an Individual. An the FBI ha for all 1U work, of which this I only a part, arc about 5.000 operatives. It has done a magnificent Job without Impairing our liber ties and those who attack It often arc those who fear surveillance.
