The averting of the rail strike In spired early buying all around. Re ports that Russia is willing to dis cuss differences with the United States propped sentiment but arma ment Issues, such as the aire rafts, were depressed. Steels enjoyed a late upward flurry. Oalns running to a point or more were reduced or erased here and there by mid-day. Slightly mixed tendencies prevailed near the close. The turnover of about 1.700.000 (hares was one of the best since April 33. On the losing end the greater part of the time were Boeing, Douglas Aircraft, United Aircraft, Northern Pacific (reflecting a March net loss). Anaconda. Kennecott and Oulf Oil. Peaks for 1948 were touched by Rock Island preferred (on a pleas ing dividend), Southern Pacific, Standard Oil (Ohio) (on an earn ings Jump) and Radio Corp. Bonds were selectively improved and commodities uneven.
