The bill would five the fish commission power to make reg ulations as to seasons ana oiner matters, which now must be handled bv legislation. Ed Foss, Portland, and Chris Kowitz, Salem, representing sports fishing organizations, said the bill would give the fish com mission too much power over sports fishing. They feared the bill would permit the fish com' mission to open up to commer cial fishing some waters now closed to it, Foss said the fish commission has failed to conserve fish, and urged that the fish and game commissions be made to co operate more closely. John C. Veatch, Portland, chairman of the fish commission, said the bill would allow the commission to have a real con servation program. He said Ore gon nas done less of this work than any other state, and that both Washington and California give their fish departments power to make regulations. Flashy Texan Leads Country In Hoop Scores NEW YORK, Feb. 19 (IP) Unless Jim Lacy of Baltimore Loyola goes on a scoring spree in the next few weeks, Clift Mc Neely of Texas Wesleyan seems certain to capture this year's na tional collegiate basketball indi vidual high scoring race. Lacy, who two weeks ago trailed McNeely by only 29 points, now is 89 points behind with 494 points compared to McNeely's 583. The Texas flash rimmed 74 points during the week to 32 for Lacy. McNeely still is the only player reported to have crossed the 500-point mark. E. F. Parham, McNeely's team mate, retained third place at 449 points.- So did John Wilson of Anderson (Ind.) at 440,' but a new player, DarreJl Brown of Humboldt (Calif.) State, took over the fifth. rung with 432. Barber Bill Gets -Green Light SALEM, Feb. 19 (rP) Barbers need an education so they will know what they are talking about when they get customers in their chairs. Rep. William Nis kanen. Bend, told his fellow members of the house state and federal affairs committee. ' Talking about a bill to require that instructors in barber col leges should have a high school education, he said: "You have to sit there in the chair and listen to them talk, so all barbers should have an edu cation so they'll know what they're talking about" The committee thought so too, and recommended passage of the bill.. . Pro Raiding Brings Blast ABILENE, Tex., Feb. 19 VP) Warren B. Woodson, coach of Hardin-Simmons university, de livered a blast at professional football today for signing college players before they had complet ed their eligibility. Declaring "if we let this type of bidding for college players continue before the student is through -with his education, we might as well declare a mora torium on our football." Woodson charged that professional scouts had even interviewed members of his team on the days of im portant games. Woodson's blast came two days after announcement that his star back, Rudolph (Little Doc) Mob ley, had signed a contract to play with the Baltimore Colts of the All-America football confer ence although the two-time little all-America had still ' another year of eligibility left at the Abilene school. Portland Asks Customs Office PORTLAND, Feb. '19 (Jp) The Portland chamber of com merce announced today it would renew its application with the U. S. customs service for designa tion of Portland-Columbia air port as a port of entry to ex pedite air freight to Alaska. The chamber said Senator Morse had reported the customs commissioner had denied the city's request for customs airport status on the basis that it was too far from the Canadian bor der. Frank Womack, assistant man ager of the chamber, said the customs service explanation is in conflict with the fact that the city has a maritime customs rating and that inspectors here have cleared charter planes to the Hawaiian islands under a temporary permit, A hound cannot scent a doe carrying a fawn. Boldt to give his birth date. "June 14, 1873," answered the young girl with Boldt. Then Paynter asked the girl. Miss La Verne D. Anderson, to show a birth certificate because she did not appear 18 years old. She handed him a certificate giv ing the birth date, as October 5, 1928. , The marriage of the 73-year-old widower and the 18-year-old girl is set for Saturday. Of The End nignu Drive On this year, are the B league hoop champs of Klamath and Lake counties. On the other hand, the Rogues, winners of 18 straight, hold the title for Jackson and Josephine counties. Those four counties comprise B class basketball district 5, so the winner of this series goes on to Arlington for the state cham pionship playoffs. Very little is known about the Rogue River team, although Coach Webb says that he has the same outfit with the exception of one olayer that beat Merrill out of the district title last year. The Rosues. In -winning their 18 contests, have outscored their opponents by some 20 points per game. Webb was at Klamath Union high school last Saturday to look over the Panthers. Oaks Will Add Double Tier OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 19 (P) Double-decking of the Oakland park in the Pacific Coast league is planned for next year to bring the seating capacity to 20,000. Joe Blumenfeld of the Oaks announced he had purchased additional land adjacent to the park to permit the steel tier of seats, which will stretch from first base to third base. Exten sion into right field ultimately would add another 10,000 or more, Blumenfeld estimated.
