CALIF, (To the Editor) Children onloy placing pussywillow branches in a vase in a aunny window to watch the catkins burst Into bloom. Not all know that the willow was, to tho Redskin, what bamboo waa to primitive Japanese, the cocoanut palm to Spice Islands' natives. Like bamboo thatch In Japan, coco palm thatch In the Jungles, In dian used willow thatch for their summerhouscs. Willow twigs, too, were used In basket making. The wood made ar rowshafta, and fiihnctting, also tinder before the Paleface in troduced matches. The willow' inner bark was woven Into rope, Into cloth, Willow bark was prized by the Indians as medicine. A strona decoction made a ikln- discose wash. Willow tea "cured" chill -and -fever. Wll lowroot bark was boiled In large quantities to cause pro fuse sweating In almost any disease. Willowleavc infusion was a Porno remedy in check ing diarrhea. European, too, know tho willow' value. Along Holland' canals, willow twig annually are harvested for bas ket making. Pacific Coast children should learn to know the willow pine cone gall, also other wasp made, willow borne galls. Thero ore several very-well-known Wcatern willow. Others not quite so common. Those who love gale-biown Slerran peaks alway are happy to find there the Arctic willow. Thi ha crept down the mowclad range from the land of polar bears and Eskimos. This tiny willow, evolved to survive in the severe climates, is hardly taller than the length of a man' finger. It bean catkin, however, just as perfect as the tree of our warm valleys. , Sincerely, C. M. GOETHE. Some of the wire ropes in sus- Sension bridges are three inches lick.
