Feb. 13 (IP) Northrop Aircraft disclosed to day that America's first military rocket plane perhaps the world's was flown from Iso lated Harper dry lake on the desert July 3, 1044, and then was placed on the army's list of top secrets. The craft, the MX-324, was a flying wing type with only a 30 foot span and' embodied the "prone cockpit" wherein the pilot lay flat on his stomach to withstand the buffeting of far more violent maneuvers than were possible In a conventionally-powered plane, Northrop said. The MX-324 was the forerun ner of a series of bat-wing filancs, one of which ia the Fly ng Ram XP179. a prone-piloted fighter with a heavy armored wing which woo' designed to shear off the wings of an enemy plane without harm to itself. The tiny rocket plane was Jlidcr-flown Oct. 2, 1943, by ohn Myers, now Northrop's vice president in charge of sales, the company said. Then early in the summer of 1944 it was taken to Harper dry lake, near Bar stow, Calif. The morning of July 9 Test Pilot Harry Crosby climbed into the little craft, which was at tached to a P-38 fighter by a towline. With the Lockheed fur nishing the power, the plane took off and at 8000 feet Crosby cut her loose and turned on the rocket power. The flying wing flashed across the field and remained in flight about five minutes, after which Crosby made a gentle landing. BKI.D a HEWS, Klml r.lli, Ore.
