County Hoop Tourney Under Way Tomorrow Eight Squads Matched to Determine B League Champ; Championship Game Will Come Up Late Saturday Night i Bright ond eorly tomorrow morning the eight basketball outfits of the county high school B league will begin a 10-game tournament from which will come the county 1947 champion and candidate for action on o statewide basis. Klamath county this athletic sea son has already produced one state B champion the Henley Hornets in football and the No. 1 seeded team in the casaba tourney, ChiloquirTs Panthers, is rapidly gaining favor to bring a second crown into this section of the state. But there are a lot of hurdles for Chiloquin or any other of the county hoop teams to cross before thinking about the state basketball meet at Arlington. One of them is a M playoff between the eventual Grants Pass Football Series Broken Some schedule troubles are popping up for the Klamath foot ball Pelicans of next fall, and Joe Peak, athletic director, is on the prowl for at least one more game, maybe two. The gridiron scries with Grants Pass, which has been carrying on every year for a long, long time, is having to be scrapped for the present year at least, and that leaves another hole in the Pel 1947 slate. Previously there was one noticeably vacant date. Klamath Falls had slated its regular tilt with the Cavemen, to be played October 10. But in the revamping of the state prep districts Klamath was placed in one league and Grants Pass in another. The Pelicans will be in district 2 with Med ford, Ashland, Bend, Lakeview, Burns, Prine ville and Redmond, while the Cavemen are segregates with Roseburg and the other towns on the coast. To get in enough games in their district, the Cavemen had to call off the Klamath date. The Pels already had an open spot on October 31, so the situation now stands with only six football contests and an opening jamboree on the hook for sure. Lakeview, Prineville and the Pels will play in the three-way jamboree, and the other tilts are with Medford, Ashland, Bend, Salem, Grant and The Dalles, a skimpy slate. So Jo Peak is looking for another gam or two. H has put out fUrs to Roseburg, Hood River. Reno. Sacramento, Longview and to some teams in the California bay area, but with no visible success yet. . But he still has hopes of filling at least one of the dates, preferably October 31, for a home game. P. S. Anyone having a high school football team desiring to play the Pelicans October 10 or 31. please wire Joe Peak, direc tor of athletics, Klamath Union high school, Klamath Falls, Ore., collect. Four Hoop Teams Slaied For AAU District Action According to latest word from across the hill, only four teams will participate in the Southern Oregon AAU district basketball tourney, now tentatively slated for February 24-25 at the Med ford gym. Jean Eberhart of the Ashland Elks, who is handling the AAU arrangements, sail, that since only two dates at the gym are available, just four quintets rather than eight will be in the tourney, and the winner will re present this district at the AAU hoop meet in March. The Ashley Chevrolet squad is expected to get the call from Klamath, while other teams will be drawn from the Grants Pass, Medford and Ashland areas. Jim Maguire, president of the Klamath Basin league, said that he expects the Ashley team to uphold its commitment to finish the Basin league season and take part in the playoffs, whether it goes into AAU competition or not. Playoff dates here are Feb ruary 26 and March 1, so there Ml Walcott's time, the other two as welterweight champs were instances of a resting combatant uarreu namngion mu would be no conflict with the proposed AAU dates at Medford. The Ashley quint is in first place in the city division, and has only one more game to play. Portland Loses Second Baseman PORTLAND. Ore., Feb. 13 The Portland Beavers had one more pitcher on their roster to day but appeared to have lost a second baseman. The Beavers, winning their 10th conference gume tu one de feat by Washington, easily de feated last year's titleholders 71 to 37 although big Red Rocha, center, who. scored 36 points for a new northern division mark Tuesday night, tallied only 18 points.
