First-Place Beavers Entertain Webfoots By The Associated Prats The University of Washington basketball team has vowed Itself a vow, but over at Moscow, Ida., and down at Corvallis, Ore., nobody will have much time to think about it until next week after the two northern division leaders get a couple of tough assignments out of the way. At Corvallis the front-running Oregon State Beavers will entertain (they hope not) a University of Oregon club which has Jailed to live up to its pre-season promise by losing six of its 10 division games to date. The Moscow fracas will be the third collision of the vastly im proved Washington State college Cougars and Idaho's unwinning Vandals. WSC has won seven straight after dropping its first three. OSC has lost just one in seven, that to Washington at Seattle. If Oregon has been va disap pointment to the fans its record must be even more unpleasant to the players, who can recall that all their losses but two have been by paper -thin margins. . Washington State drubbed Ore gon's Ducks by 14 points in one tussle and Oregon State took one by 13, but Oregon pushed the Beavers into an overtime in losing another by four and dropped one tussle to the Cou gars by two tallies, another by one. The sixth loss was a two pointer to Washington. The record shows Oregon has scored 535 points in division play against 537 by opponents. Washington State, which took two terrific drubbings from OSC before it started to roll, has an even tighter scoring record, with 462 points against opponents' 461. ' As for the vow: Washington's Huskies came home from a dis astrous road trip to Oregon, in which they lost three out of four games, and solemnly agreed not to lose any more this year. The third-place Huskies have four games left all at home against Oregon and Washington State. . Three Holes Left BOSTON, Feb. 7 (VP) The Red Sox today received the signed contract of Catcher Hall Wag ener which left but three key players of the American league champions unsigned. Ursal Snapp is doing his bag punching and shadow boxing down at Merrill, while Sonny Kelly Jackson is training at the PAL gymnasium in Portland. The boys will fight it out over the 10-round route at the armory Tuesday, making up the bout which was postponed from last Tuesday. Snapp's cut eye, which caused the first postponement, is healing fairly well. Jackson, the Omaha Negro and boxing stylist, is being train ed by Larry Caputo who has seen Snapp fight on numerous occasions and according to word received here is designing a de fense to meet snapp s long- armed style of punch-throwing. Four other bouts are being lined up for the card by (Pro moter Mack Lilliard and Match maker Larry McLane. Reserve seat tickets are now on sale at Matt Finnigan's sporting goods store. The Frosh, coached by Ted Schopf, formerly of Chiloquin and well known here, have a season's record ot 19 straight victories. Tha county B leagua will ba in tha final go-round of its schedule tonight, with Chiloquin, Henley and Gil christ coming right down to tha wira almost neck and nack. Chiloquin's Panthers, unde feated in all competition to date, have six league wins and no losses, while Henley and Gilchrist have five and one. Tonight the Gilchrist Grizzlies play the Panthers at Chiloquin while Henley goes to Bonanza. Result of these games can defi nitely decide the first, second and third spots in the county standings, or could finish every thing up in a three-ply dead lock. Should Gilchrist overcome Chiloquin and Henley get past Bonanza, all three teams would be knotted at six and one in the standings. However. Gilchrist isn't con ceded much chance of taking the powerful Panthers Chilo quin won an early-season non conference game at Gilchrist, 54 to 21. Henley's Hornets should have little trouble with Bonanza and the seeding for the county tournament next week will probably have Chilo quin first, Henley second and Gilchrist third. Last night at Malin the Ma lta Mustangs clinched fourth placa with a 35-19 victory over Sacred Heart Academy. Tha win gives tha Mustangs a season's record of four and three. The only other county game tonight places Bly against Mer rill. As an added attraction at KUHS, the Pelican junior var sity will play a preliminary tilt with Hal's Sport Shop of the Klamath Basin league, be ginning at 7 o'clock. During halftime of the Pell-can-Oregon Frosh encounter the girls' physical education class, coached by Lillian Redkey.will give a tumbling exhibition. Some 275 seats were added to the downstairs part of the KU gymnasium today in prepa ration for an expected packed house, and the gym now will accommodate about 1500 spec tators. Golf Proves Too Much For Coger , FOREST GROVE, Feb. 7 VP) Avis Crossley, manager of the Forest Grove baseball team, should have stuck to his own business. Shifting to the golf course, Crossley took a hefty swing, missed, and twisted a fracture into his leg in two places. He'll be outdoors again in six weeks. Ilk St. rkent S17I Chilean, Joe Louis In Fracas MEXICO CITY, Feb. 7 UP) Heavyweight Champion Joo Louis and Chilean Arturo Godoy, twice a contender for the world title, meet for the third time in a ten-round, no-decision bout to night inaugurating Louis' Latin American exhibition tour. The scene is the new 60,000 scat bullring and Promoter Gene Lucas has high hopes of a sell out that might result in a gate of $400,000. Both were pronounced in "good shape." Louis has been in training here for more than a week, while Godoy arrived only three days ago. Godoy says the mile and a halt altitude doesn't bother him, but Louis admits it affects him "Just a little." The fight will be in two-minute rounds instead ot the regulation three. The champion's take for the exhibition is $50,000 and 40 per cent of the profits, while Godoy gets a flat $10,500 and expenses. The government will receive 15 per cent ot the gross in taxes. The house is scaled from $2 to $30. Godoy will be fighting at what he calls "my best weight" 200 pounds. MED FORD, Feb. 7 The Southern Oregon conference (district 4) basketball conference is knotted up tighter than a tick as of now, but the Mcdford Black Tornado has a chance to climb ahead of the Klamath Falls Pelicans tonight. Currently the Tornado and Pelican are tied at seven wins and a single loss each, and tne Klamath hoopsters are not tak ing part in conference doings this week-end. Medford has a game with the Cavemen at Grants Pass tonight, and a return tilt at Mcdford to morrow night. Two wins would put the Tornado way ahead ot the Pels in the standings, while a split would drop Medford into second place by a few percentage points. Ashland climbed out of the cellar Tuesday with a 26-23 win over Central Point, and the two teams meet again tonight. . Coyotes Said To Be Stock Menace SALEM, Feb. 7 (tfV-Eastern Oregon coyotes are becoming a serious menace and must be con trolled to prevent heavy live stock losses and depletion of game animals, Roy Schaffcr and his son, Arnold Schaffcr, both of Wallowa county, told the senate game committee Thursday. The Schaffers favored larger coyote bounties for hunters and trappers. Roy Schaffer said hunting' and trapping is more effective than poison. New Umpqua Law SALEM. Feb. 7 (IP) Governor Earl Snell signed into law Thurs day house bill 26, which repeals the 10-inch trout law on the North and South Umpqua rivers and places authority for all angling regulations with the two main tributaries of the Umpqua upon the state game commission.
