The finishing blow came mid way of the third after Snapp had been given a definite edge in points in the first and second rounds. It caught Woods coming in he never backed up and landed with a thud on the left side of the Spokane boxer's jaw. Woods' feet came up and he went backward onto the can vas, out for the full count. In the previous fighting Woods had been on the floor three times and Snapp once. The first round saw Woods drop to his knee for a second, then get up and put Ursal on the canwis for seven. A moment later Woods was down for nine at the bell. The second canto was more of a defensive fight on .both sides, but Snapp's reach was coming in mighty handy. Joe Wood's was on the floor for a second early in that heat, but his rushing late in the round almost pulled that one out for him. A virtual capacity crowd at the armory witnessed the first box ing card of the new year. The preliminaries were also good. In the welterweight semi windup Monte Montgomery won a TKO from Ralph Wciser in the third, after he had more or less carried Weiser for two heats. Beferee Wally Moss at the end of the second warned both boys to get in and fight, and Montgom ery almost made hamburger of Weiser's visage in the next min ute of slugging. Bob Eastman knocked out tils middleweight opponent. Glenn O'Neill, in the second round of a scheduled four rounder. The firtt stanta was even, and both boys went out for murder in the second. A right hand smash to the head bounced O'Neill halfway across the ring. He took the count on his knees, but wasn't able to get up. Eddie Johann. middleweight, was penalized the las round of his fight with Melvin Weaver for holding, but took a unanimous decision in the brawling. There were no knockdowns. In the- opener, lightweight class. Gene Gist captured the first two rounds from Bobby Barney by slugging, and Barnev was down for six in the second. Barney came back with renewed vigor in the third to knock Gist down three times, once for nine, but wasn't able to put on the fin isher. Gist got the last round on points. - ' Chuckwaqon Racer Named Director CALGARY. Alberta. Filchock Admits He Lied About Bribery NEW YORK, Jan. 8 M') Mayor Wllllnm O'Dwyer gave Half back Frank Filchock a "clean bill of health" to play In the New York Giants-Chicago Bears title footbnll gnmo December 15, be cause the passing ace insisted he had not received a bribe offer, Yet, court exhibits Indicated that the district attorney's office had evidence eight hours before the klckoff that Filchock defi nitely had received an offer of $2500 to throw the game, but was permitted to play anyway. This was brought out in general sessions court yesterday when Assistant District Attorney George Monaglian read Into the record the signed statement of Alvin J. Purls, self-styled "big bettor." that he had made' the fix bid to both Filchock and Fullback Merle Hapcs at least five days before the game. The statement was introduced in evidence in Paris' trial on the fix charges shortly before the state rested Its case. Mona- ghan said lie personally had taken the statement from the slim 28-year-old novelty manu facturer, and that it was all signed and delivered at 6:15 a. m., December 15, the morning of the game. There were still eight hours to go before the 2:05 p. m. kickoff, yet no ban was put on Filchock. Hap.s. however, was barred from the tilt. At the time. National Football League Commissioner Bert Bell re vealed that the reason he permitted Filchock to play was because the mayor, him self, after questioning the halfback privately, suggested it. "When we were In the may ors Gracie mansion tne mgnt before the game." Bell related, "Mr. O'Dwyer took Filchock in to another room alone. They came out and the mayor put his arm on Filchock's shoulder and said he had a clean bill . of health and suggested that yhe be allowed to play." Filchock did admit in his testimony yesterday thai he lied to the mayor about not. having received the bribe bid, because he feared that if he admitted it, he would be bench ed. Both Hapcs and Filchock ad mitted that Paris had offered them money to throw the game, that they both turned the bid down, but that they continued to see Paris afterward in spite of it. Both said they were in terested in getting jobs with Paris' novelty manufacturing concern. In his statement, Paris relat ed he made the offer to Hapes at the Copacabana night club the night of December 8, and to Filchock in the Paris office apartment on West 56th street on December 10.
