Pelicans Practicing Under Arcs Last Night'i Session Devoted Mainly To Work On Off emlre Tactic Despite the dropping ther mometer end threatened rein, the Pelicans donned their work clothes and held a lengthy prac tice session on the Modoc turf yesterday afternoon. The lads worked until dark then contla tied under the arcs. Vcrv little body-contact scrim- maging was called for during the session and Coaches Ang atead and Ryan concentrated on the Pelicans offensive Don nana ling and passing attack. Their ball-hawking was click ing right along in practice ana laterals irom bjuarieroacK oik. nr to his runners worked with out a hitch. Long passes seemed to be causing more trouble than running plays and the boys went through repeated aerial drills while their tossers were locating their targets. Louis Browns announced to day that George McQuinn, vet eran nrst baseman, had been traded to the Philadelphia Ath letics for First Sacker Dick Sie bert. It was a straight player transaction. McQuinn is 34 years old, Sie bert 31. During the past season McQuinn hit .277 for the Browns, driving in 60 runs and hitting seven home runs. Ind., Oct. 17 (IP) If the rattle of opponents' teeth from the blocks and tackles of Purdue's Boilermak ers is noticeably louder this year, it's because Coach Cecil Isbell was extra attentive in the psychology class in his under graduate days. The Boilermaker mentor, who takes his charges to Ohio State Saturday for a ranking Big Ten tussle, has a practice routine de signed to bring his players out for the kickoff in a mood some thing akin to that of the Nean derthal man on meat hunt. - "I don't want my players worn out with contact foot ball on Saturday." he ex plains. "I want them eager to go hit somebody." So he takes away the custom ary contact diet through the week. Purdue's drills during the regular season include no heavy blocking or tackling. A "sham battle" is played, however, by full squads in reg ular equipment. The linemen block and the backs get in posi tion for blocks. But each play ends with a toot from Isbell's whistle instead of a tackle that might send a player to the hospital. Another innovation of the Is bell system, which may or may not have grown from his faith in his ability to whip his men into a savage game-time mood, is his remote control coaching system. It's a new wrinkle to the com mon practice of placing a coach ing assistant in the press box for a birdseya view At Purdue Isbell himself takes over the telephone booth atop the grand stands. Isbell, contending that "the bench is the worst teat in the stadium" from which to spot flaws in the play of both teams, talks to each player coming out of the game by phone. Those chats, he iay. are much like the other coaches have with players while reviewing moves of the game the following Monday. "Only," says Isbell, "I can toll them how to correct their mistakes while the game still is going on. We correct our faults before it's too late."
