It fought in the sub zero cold of the Arctic and in the 125-degree heat under coco nut trees. I n hunting down the ene my, from Attu to the South Pacific, the men of the Hour glass Division earned the m- sclves two major honors. At AU tu the Seventh earned the dis tinction of recapturing the first American soil taken by the Jap anese. And at Kwajalcin in tne Marshall Islands, the Seventh, with the Fourth Marines, won the first of ground held by the Japs prior to Pearl Harbor.. The Seventh started its battle against the Japs in May, 1943, when it hit the beaches of Attu. Early in 1944 the Seventh went ashore at Kwajalein, and six days later the Stars and Stripes flew over the atoll. In the bloodv battle for Leyte, the Hourglassers hit the beach on D-Day and soon found them selves opposed by one oi ine crack Jap divisions the 16th, perpetrators of the infamous n,ln nnalh March." Thpv eliminated the NiDS, But the toughest fight for the Seventh started on Easter bun- day, 1945, when the Hourglass ers landed on Okinawa. There they met everything the Japs could throw at them. One of the bloodiest battles of the war saw the Seventh assault hill 178 for six davs before taking this an chor position in the enemy de fense line. Townsend Council To Seek Special Session PORTLAND. Oct. 3 (P) The Oregon Townsend council said today it will seek a special session of the state legislature to deal with "acute conditions" among the state's old age assist ance beneficiaries. State Townsend Representa tive Harold H. Wilcox said cost of living has risen beyond the amount received per momn py aged persons. PLANT TO BE REBUILT PORTLAND.
