The thermometer didn't mean
a thing to the Seventh Infantry
Division when it came to kill
ing Japs. It fought in the sub
zero cold of the Arctic and in
the 125-degree heat under coco
nut trees.

tinction of recapturing the first
American soil taken by the Jap
anese. And at Kwajalcin in tne
Marshall Islands, the Seventh,
with the Fourth Marines, won
the first of ground held by the
Japs prior to Pearl Harbor..
The Seventh started its battle
against the Japs in May, 1943,
when it hit the beaches of Attu.
Early in 1944 the Seventh
went ashore at Kwajalein, and
six days later the Stars and
Stripes flew over the atoll.
In the bloodv battle for Leyte,
the Hourglassers hit the beach
on D-Day and soon found them
selves opposed by one oi ine

But the toughest fight for the
Seventh started on Easter bun-
day, 1945, when the Hourglass
ers landed on Okinawa. There
they met everything the Japs
