The fprmer New York Yankee tosser was calmly confident as he took on the Bengals. "I know how to pitch to them and my arm is stronger than it has been all season," blonde Hank quietly asserted. , The Tigers, to a man, faced Borowy without any - false il lusions. "We know he's tough, but we're 'counting on Newhous er to be just a little tougher," declared Roy Cullenbine. Hank Greenberg who clouted a homer off Borowy last July when the latter was still a Yankee, rated the ex-American leaguer as the one Cub pitcher who may bother the Tigers. Greenberg still likes to talk about that four-run homer that clinched the pennant for the Tigers against St. Louis last Sun day. Manager Lefty O'Doul's Bay City club is flying north today for the first three engagements of the seven-game finals. The two teams will play in Seattle tonight, Thursday and Friday, then resume play in San Fran cisco Sunday. The scries will end when one outfit wins four games. Suds Sore A bitterly fought playoff is expected as the Rainiers have been gunning for the Seals ever since O'Doul remarked for pub lication late in July that the Skiffmen were not even a good second division club. Seattle holds a 16-12 bulge in games be tween the two teams during the 1945 schedule. A brilliant two-hit pitching performance by Righthander Joe Dcmoran (20-10) spelled defeat for the Beavers. Their only tally came on Ted Gullic's second inn ing home run over the left field wall. Ad Liska, who beat Dem oran last week, was charged with the loss. An error by Short stop Johnny O'Neil with two away allowed Seattle to push over its three tallies in the fourth. Demoran took the mound yes terday after only two days of rest. Seals Rally Sacramento teed off against. 31-game winner Bob Joyce to take a 4-0 lead over the Seals in the first three innings, and sent the big righthander to the show ers by adding another tally in the fifth. San Francisco got two runs off starting pitcher Jim Mc Carthy in the third and then ex ploded for six more off Reliefer Guy Fletcher in the last of the fifth on a combination of four hits, two walks and an error. Each club counted once more be fore the end of the game. Elmer Orella, who replaced Joyce in the fifth, got credit for the win although he was replaced by Bob Barthelson in the sixth. New Strength Sighted For WSC Squad PULLMAN, Wash., Oct. 3 UP) Reinforcements were sighted for the Washington State college football team with Coach Phil Sorboe's announcement yester day that Gene Arger, letterman guard of 1942, will arrive next week and that three new experi enced men . have joined the squad. The arrivals are Con Colley of Cle Elum, former all-Winko con ference fullback at St. Martin's college; Bill Murphy, Vancou ver, B. C, another fullback pros pect recently discharged from the Canadian army; Frank Mar tin, Vancouver, a halfback who has been discharged from the Ca nadian navy. The Cougar coach ran his squad through a dummy scrim mage last night, stressing de fense against Oregon State plans which may be used in next Sat urday's game. He also shifted Bob Bulled, 270-pound Tacoma frosh, from center to right guard to strengthen that side of the line. Baseball Fans Take To River DETROIT, Oct. 3 fP) Some 1000 red-hot baseball fans, sports writers and just plain tired busi ness men took to the Detroit river today as this automotive center bulged at the seams while more and more world series en thusiasts .poured into town. . . The 1000 representing a fraction of the overflow from the city's overburdened hotels and rooming houses were lodged on a large Detroit and Cleveland Navigation company steamship, which was tied up at the foot of Wayne street, near the downtown area. Bangl Clipper Smith Coach At San SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 3 (P) Maurice J. "Clipper" Smith, who built a reputation over a 21-year span as one of the nation's top football coaches, has been signed to a five-year contract as head grid mentor at the University of San Francisco. He will take over his duties in December. A full athletic program, dropped during the war years, will be resumed by the univer sity in 1946. Smith, who achieved fame as one of the "mighty mites" of No tre Dame football between 1917- Three Class A A Leagues May Ask New AAA Rating By HAROLD HARRISON COLUMBUS, O., Cct. o ((Pi George M. Tr,iutmar, president of the American association, dis closed today thai the association and the International and Pacific Coast leagues may ask at the minor league baseball meeting here in JJtcembor to be placed in a new class AAA among minor loops. . The three leagues now are the only ones in class AA, but the Southern association has ap plied for that same rating. "The three class AA leagues are considering making that re quest," Trautman said, "and if it is done a final decision must be made by about November 1." He explained that under minor league rules such a re quest must be made in writing at least 30 days before the an nual meeting. The minors' an nual gathering here will open December 5. From other sources it was learned that the Southern asso ciation's imminent advance to class AA is one of the reasons the creation of the new classifi cation is being considered. Officials of the present class Seals Will Hold Spring Practice In Sunny Hawaii HONOLULU, Oct. 3 fP) The San Francisco Seals of the Pa cific Coast Baseball league will do their spring training in Ha waii. Paul Fagan, part owner of the club, said 60 picked players, officials and newsmen will fly out here next year. Between 1925-28 he was at Gomaga university, Spokane, Wash.; moved to Simla Clara where he turned out pow erful grid teams from 1929-35; and then transferred to Villa nova where he was at the helm between 1936-42. When Villanova dropped the sport three years ago Smith joined the marine corps, in which he became a captain. He received his discharge a few weeks ago. AA loops do not feel there is room for another league in that group. The only requirement for class AA rating is that the total population of the league s mem ber cities be 1,750,000 by the last federal census. Moore May fie First-String UW Fullback SEATTLE. Oct. 3 (PI Bobo Moore, who saw action only Dnetiy in the Oregon game last week but was the only Washing ton D8CK to make any yardage through the Oregon line, may draw the starting assignment at fullback Saturday when the Uni versity of Washington meets California at Berkeley. Moore is a two-year veteran returning after marine corps service. Failing to show fire in practice, Moore lost the start ing job for the season's opener to Freshman Leo Trask. The two fullbacks are nearly the same size. Both arc 5 feet 9 inches tall and Moore weighs in at 185. just three pounds more than Trask.
