EIGHT HERALD AND HEWS Thursday, May 31, 1143 OP Navy Units Under Construction FISH SOURCES EYED IN BILL PROTECTION WASHINGTON, May SI P Aimed at protection of the fish ing resources of the west, a bill is before congress to permit the fish and wild life service to par ticipate in planning reclamation facilities. Senator Cordon (R-Ore.), c wildlife enthusiast, introduced the bill last month and it was referred to the senate's special committee on wild life re sources. Hearings are planned late this summer, when the many congressmen now absent on in vestigations or inspections have returned to their omces. The bill would declare' that "no impoundment, diversion or other water control facility shall be constructed by any agency of the federal government, or by any public or private agency under leaerai permit, wai aoes not include adequate means and measures, so far as practicable, as approved by the fish and wild life service, in cooperation with the constructing or authorizing agency, to prevent loss of and damage to fish or acquatics, de pendent upon the waters alien ed ... ." To carry out its part of the program, the fish and wild life service would be authorized to make the necessary investiga tions and the cost of these and such protective devices as are necessary to effectuate its rec ommendations, would constitute "an integral part of the costs of the project. The bill also authorizes in vestigations into stream pollu tion and orders that reports shall be made to congress with recommendations for alleviating dangerous and undesirable effects. Homaja huts being built to house navy personnel are constructed in the snap of airplane hangars, Thar will ba 31 two-apartment units. Some relief from the housing situation here is expected with the completion o: 31 ttomaja huts, the latter part of June, be ing constructed adjacent to the naval air station. The huts, 30 by 36 feet each, will contain two apartments and house two navy families. Each apartment will have two bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bath. They will be connect ed with the station sewer and water systems, and will be heat ed by coal stoves. The navy provides linen, bed ding, dishes and furniture. In all there will be 31 two-family huts, a laundry building and a maintenance building. The 80 units out on Washburn way are completed and have been occupied by 48 navy and 32 marine families since May 1. These were constructed by the federal housing authority, under Project Engineer Harry Gamble. Additional construction has been started by Halvorsen Con struction company on 1SS family units adjacent to the 80 unit pro ject. These facilities are expect ed to be completed September 1, 1945, Gamble stated. Forty of these units will be oc cupied by navy families and 115 by marine. Onlv a few laborers are work ing now on account of the bad weather. Gamble said. The lum ber bottleneck has eased up, however, and work is progress ing as quickly as the weather al lows. Twenty per cent of the work is already completed. Trailer houses in the trailer unit on Washburn way are be ing renovated by the govern ment with new paint inside and out. The work is progressing without disturbing the families occupying- them. Lawns and landscaping by Lakeshore nurseries is being held up on ac count of wet weather.
