Girl and Mother Face Charges of Attack on Nurse CALGARY, Alta., July 21 (U.R) A pretty, 24-year-old model and her socially-prominent mother to-day faced charges they tarred and feathered a young undergrad uate nurse In her apartment. Mrs. J. L. Allen, 53, and her daughter Betty, declined to plead at their arraignment to charges of "assault occasioning bodily harm" entered by Alice Knowles, 28. The '. case was put over to July 27. Miss Knowles was in a hospital under, treatment for shock and : bums. She charged the woman at tacked her one time before the tarring and feathering. She said they slapped her face and broke her classes. Friends revealed she was refused police protection Sun day. The alleged tarring episode occurred Tuesday. And haven't written to, either ... I was showing them the map, pointing out where Klamath Falls is and the round-about tour we made to get to the bay region , . , One of the girls put her finger on "Klamath Falls," and said, "And now, Where's Cal-Ore?" THAT'S the truth. I TRIED to pin her down to find out where she had heard about Cal-Ore. but she couldn't remember anybody In particular . . . She just said she remembered hearing various people mention It, and that everything said was very favorable. Speaking of Cal-Ore, as I always seem to be ... I had letter Thursday from some friends who said they would arrive here the 88th or 20th, because they were timing them selves so they could go to Cal Ore with us on a Saturday night. Electric Roaster At Garcelon's T WAS reminded of the ease - with which we fill our rooms with light, when I looked over the Westinghouse electric roaster I saw at Garcelon's . . . It's really a marvel . . . And the shop has a spe cial price ot 24.95 on this one, which is a saving ot SS.OO . . . Because it's the last one in stock. THERE are 101 practical nses for the roaster, including the broiler grid . . . They're all item ized in a booklet with directions on how to do them . . . You can cook a whole meal in one. you know . . . Including vegetables and hot dessert ... Just set the automatic heat control dial, and let the meal cook Itself, IT'S ALSO a wonder at can ning, doing 12 pint Jars easily. ONE NICE thing about the electric roaster is that yon can cook a meal in it, put the whole roaster, Including the meal, in your car, and have it still hot when you stop to eat at picnic- time. Bustling On Style Horizon T GUESS bustles really are going x to come back sometime within the next year . . . The other day I read that hats already have taken a definite forward tilt in order to counter-balance the bustle effect. THAT'S the way bonnets sat ... Up in the back and down over the eyes .... In the days when the bigger shelf a gal showed in bark, the more . . "elegant" she looked. ONE WONDERS, however, how far sportswear will follow the bustle trend , . . Bonds total ing J66.000 voted some time ago for Installation ot water are gen eral obligation bonds and self liquidating. No portion ot these bonds may be used tor sewage In stallation. Revenue for the dis posal project must come from taxation ot the city's 2S1 lots. Water will be charged for at a reasonable rate, although the local rate Is expected to be slightly higher than In many other local ities, with' a minimum charge ot probably not more than S3 per month. The first rough estimate made by Attorney Lederer and William Wales, city engineer, on cost of the dual . Installation project totaled 156. 0Q0. Only the amount needed of the $66,000 bond Issue voted several months ago will be used In water distribution, the remainder ot the total to remain unsold. While the total ot the assessment bonds to be voted upon has not aa yet been determined by the council. Installation of both systems will not exceed the first estimate, it is believed. The ses sion was largely attended with arguments for and against the systems highlighting the meeting. The council discussed and shelved until the next meeting an amendment to the ordinance gov erning licensing of carnivals and circuses and o.k.'d a petition made by members ot the 20-30 club tor sponsorship of a tent show in the near future, part of the gate re ceipts to go to the club for finan cing the park improvement pro gram for which the club is largely responsible. Meantime, buying In wholesale markets continued to expand. "Although consumer demand continued brisk for light summer apparel, vacation necessities, and some lines ot house furnishings, retail activity on the whole wns moderately lower than a week ago," the survey said. "To some extent, the decline seemed attributable to shortages of desirable merchandise; this was an Important factor In de partment stores, where stock of many types ot summer goods were frequently reported too low to warrant the usual heavy clear ance promotions. "A few stores felt that the re duction In WPA rolls was already cutting into sales totals, but the majority found no appreciable change as yet In this type ot buy ing. ALASKA-U. $. HIGHWAY ROUTES UNDERSTUDY. (Continued from Page One) the province than any other fea ture of the highway scheme on grounds the United States may be Interested primarily In a military road. However; Premier Pattulo has argued that the United States would not obtain control of tbe road by reason of such a loan. Aa to the highway being a military road, he said: "If the road serves military pur poses for the United Stales it will also serve Canada. If the United Statea gets into a tight box In war on the Pacific we're in it whether we like It or not." Members of the Canadian com mission are: Charles Stewart, Ot tawa, chairman; Brig. Gen. T. L. Tremblay, Quebec; J. M. Wardis, department of mlnea and re sources, Ottawa, and Arthur Dixon, British Columbia, public works department, and J. W. Spencer, both ot Victoria. Rep. Warren G. Magnuson, (D-Wash.), Is chairman of the American commission. Other members are James W. Carey, Seattle engineer; Donald Macdon ald, Fairbanks, Alaska engineer; Ernest H. Oruenlng, director of tbe division of territories, depart ment ot Interior and Thomaa H. Rlggs, New York. Two British Columbia survey parties now are working slowly through the province's northland, mapping out two suggested routes for tbe road. A S25.UOO grant was approved by the last provincial legislature, to pay tor the prelim inary surveys. One route follows tbe coastline, the other lies behind the towering coast range mountains. The coast route would be north from Haielton, then west through Telegraph creek and Atlln with a maximum altitude of 5000 feet at some points. The interior route, slightly longer, would follow the Peace, Liard and Pelly rivers from Fin- lay Forks, through Whitewater, Llard Post, Frances Lake, Ross River and pelly Crossing, then on to Dawson, Y. T. Maximum altitude ot this route would be about 3160 feet and Its sponsors claim the longer distance would be compensated by better weather conditions In the winter months, making it easier to keep tbe road open all year.
