Girls State, sponsored by the Am erican Legion Auxiliary, gives outstanding girls just com pleting their junior year in high school an opportunity to learn about city, county, and state governments through actual experience. At the clos ing session Saturday two girls will be selected to represent Oregon at Girls Nation in Washington, D. C. later in the summer. The girls will be aided by some 24 women of the Auxiliary and 11 past citizens of Girls State in the week-long program. Selected from Detroit school to participate was Madelyn Smith of Idanha and Laura Storey of Detroit. Named al ternate was Cecilia William son. Miss Smith is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith of Idanha and Miss Storey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Storey of Detroit. Miss Williamson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Junior Williamson of Idanha. S. Army En gineer District’s Willamette Basin flood control program. A. Warren Jones, Execu tive Secretary of the Will amette Basin Committee and coordinator of dedication cer emonies, has announced that Oregon’s Governor Tom Mc Call and senior United States Senator Wayne Morse, and Major General Frederick J. Clarke, Deputy Chief of Army Engineers will speak at the event. The three principals will each flip switches simuntan- eously to open the spillway gates of the dam, permitting water t.o run through, and symbolically placing the com bined $82,300,000 Green Peter and Foster Dams project in operation. Jones also said that Ore gon’s Congressman Al Ullman of the Second Congressional District would be master of ceremonies at the dedication which will start at 2:30 p. m. The publitc is invited to attend the dedication which is being sponsored by the Linn County Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Willamette Basin Project Committee. Jones has asked persons planning to at tend the event to bring their own folding chairs.
